    stock steelies vs aftermarket wheels.

    hi there..

does anyone ever weighted how heavy are their wheels in total? (ie wheels + tyres)

i've just weighted my stock steelies today. 4x100 175/65/R14 they weigh around 11-12kgs.

just wondering wat aftermarket wheels are lighter than them (wheels + tyres)? if not ..then wats really the point of changing aftermarket wheels. a bit confuse

we always see when buying or somone selling wheels.. it says light weight ( only around 3-5 kg or so on) but then after u put on som tyres ..say 195/50/R15 on it..it'll weight up to ~13-14kgs in total wont they?

    post up som comments guys
apologise for my ignorance on these.

not only do steelies look plain but they are also very narrow, once you start getting some power in a front wheel drive car this becomes quite a problem. usually when you get aftermarket wheels they're a fair bit wider so this is a good reason to get them in my opinion. another reason is handling, stock wheels versus some aftermarket wheels with decent tread the difference will be quite noticable.

    icic..

disregarding the looks here. just like to know more on other stuff.

true tat stock wheels are narrow..but won narrow provide less grip hence may hav a better launch? perhaps if its for winding roads may not b as good cause less traction..i agree.

more opinion pls any comments on weight wise?

no narrow wont provide a better launch, if anything narrow wheels will make for a harder launch especially if you have alot of power. narrow wheels would be good at higher speed as there would be less friction

Most of the weight comes from the compressed air within the tire as well remember.

You said your stock 14" steelies weigh around 11-12Kgs? I have some lightweight wheels (15" 205/50/15) and they weigh around 13Kgs or a bit less I think (will have to double check). So with all 4 wheels...........

WHen I went from stockies to my lightweight rims, I actually noticed a 'slight' increase in torque down low. But no change in the mid/high range.

EDIT: WTF did I get 8Kgs from!
