    VTI-R 1999 Gear problems

    Hi guys,
I bought this car back in last december, at first it was a little hard to shift down to gear 2 but now its extremely hard to go down to gear 2 from gear 3 OR shift into gear 2 from coasting. When i attempt to shift to gear two it seems like gear crunches so i quickly shift to gear 3 (which is supposely bad for engine??)

Only 2nd gear have this problem.

Could this problem be the transmission oil? gear box?

Any suggestion what i could do to fix this problem permanently? and if possible how much would it cost at the garage (My budget is very tight) and i live in liverpool=)

    Many thanks in advance!

Could be your synchro, or an ISB (Input Shaft Bearing) problem, probably your synchro since it crunches and other gears are fine.

To replace a synchro/bearing you'd have to have the gearbox removed, taken apart, bearings/synchros replaced, seals replaced, gearbox oil replaced, reinstall gearbox into car.

An average price for this from a workshop/mechanic would be $600-$1000 including labour.

You are describing classic gearbox syncro wear. Do like Geeang said. They other option would be to source a 2nd hand 'box and put it in. Gearbox overhaul would be better IMO, as 2nd hand 'boxes can sometimes be a bit of a grey area, who knows what shape they might be in.
