Anyone know how to do this without breaking gear knob i tried twisting off gear knob turns but nothing happens... feels like its going to break...

Not sure what the S knob looks like, but they usually similar.
Is there a screw at the bottom of the knob? If so turn it CLOCKWISE to loosen it. Knob will then twist off easily in an regular ANTI-CLOCKWISE direction.
