WTF guys, my girlfriend's brother spend $300 on a soundsystem for his car - a headunit and 2 front speakers...

and shit, it sounds better than my stock FD stereo - a bit less bassy, but the surroundyness sounds so good - anyone know how to tweak our stereos?

Do you think its more related to the speakers, or the headunit?

CBF double din, I like my OEM stacker, but i'm happy to replace speakers, add an amp and subby.

the head unit is the driver, the speaker is just responding to what the head unit is telling it to do.
so if ur head unit is weak sending out weak signal to strong speaker, the speaker will project weak
if your head unit is sending strong signal to a weak speaker, the speaker will project the best it can do

    To clarify:
Weak HU + good speaker = weaksauce, with speakers trying their best, solution: replace HU
Good HU + weak speaker = weaksauce, with speakers bottlenecking the goodness, solution: replace speakers
    Good HU + good speaker = ???

My question is: is stock HU decent enough? i.e. good enough to just throw in an RCA convertor and run a subby + amp?

In anticipation of: "why dont you just replace the HU"
I like the OEM look of the stacker, I've heard that the stock HU is of decent quality, if this is true and someone could confirm, I think it would be more COST effective to just get an RCA convertor to throw in a subby and amp, as opposed to buying a new HU + double din, and having a decent stock HU sitting in the garage waiting for you to refit it a few years down the track.

"i.e. good enough to just throw in an RCA convertor and run a subby + amp?"

round 1 - ive done that, i found that the sub just overpowered the oem speakers cos the speakers couldnt keep up with the bass from the subs, had that "this is not a quite right feeling"

round 2 - so i ditched the head unit, ran an aftermarket one with the sub and oem speakers, it was better and had more control of the bass levels but felt that the oem speakers still lacked the clarity

round 3 - swapped all speakers and never looked back since, did lose an arm and leg in the process though

Sorry to hear about the arm and leg =[

Guess it goes to show that you can't skimp on these things.

what you could do is in order to keep the stock head unit is get a sound processor which upgrades the the signal from the stock head unit and run aftermaker amps/speakers/subs off that

thats if you're anal about sound, but if you're just an avg joe even running a rca output from the head unit to signal the sub is perfectly fine

    its just preference
