pipe is an air port (not airport ). It's used to tune the box to a specific frequency. You have probably seen boxes like that in shops or elsewhere. Some have a pipe, some have a slot, or even a triangle. Shape doesn't really matter, but the square surface and the length of the port must be calculated properly, otherwise the sub would sound wrong - like either producing no deep bass, or just rumbling... There are also sealed boxes (no pipe at all), and bandpass boxes, which consist of one sealed box and one ported. Some manufacturers make one wall on these boxes out of see-through acrylic, so you can see the subwoofer inside.
Btw., which type of box we make/use depends on the subwoofer specs, one can't just decide to use this or that type... There's so much to the topic, of which I have not so much knowledge, but I'm sure if you become interested, there are tons of other forums on the net, with ppl who know their stuff...
