AFR control is used to maximize the benefits of intake header and exhaust mods but weather a car increases in peformance is not soley dependent on having an AFR controller. A less restricive intake and exhaust will still provide a slightly better improvement over stock, and it won't make your car go slower unless you do something stupid like put in a 3" exhaust causing you to loose back pressure or position the pod where it only sucks in hot air or water...
