CR-Z MUGEN seems set to soar.
23 May 2011

If you thought Hybrid technology was for the faint hearted then you are mistaken. Honda UK and MUGEN Euro have just revealed the first images of the CR-Z MUGEN – the higher performance hybrid coupe.

The supercharged CR-Z is sure to turn heads with the development phase already well on track. Early tests of the high powered hybrid have revealed that its 0-60mph reading is comparable to that of Honda’s red-blooded Civic Type R.

Honda engineers are fanatical in their belief that even thebest can be bettered, so they ruthlessly stripped 50kg from the CR-Z’s chassis, leading to a 15% increase in power; and all this at just Stage 1. With such advancements this early on, the project looks set to achieve the high targets MUGEN originally set themselves.

The car has been reconfigured to run in three modes: the original ‘Normal’ and ‘Eco’ modes have been preserved, but the ‘Sport’ mode has been transformed into a special, super-charged ‘MUGEN’ mode.

Despite all of this added power, the team have not betrayed the most important purpose of Honda’s Hybrid technology: to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from the car. Engineers are working hard to ensure that CR-Z MUGEN’s increased power will not mean increased fuel consumption,“early fuel consumption tests have been encouraging,” says Colin Whittamore from MUGEN Euro.

With the fusion of technology and innovative thinking from MUGEN and Honda, it seems the CR-Z MUGEN is set to be an incredible prototype vehicle.
