    EM1 Engine Oil Burn

I have a 1999 Honda Civic VTi-R coupe, B16A2 engine and everythings stock, its done 180,000 km. Two weeks ago I did an oilfilter and oil change using Castrol edge 5W-30 and when i check the dipstick this morning it was almost empty so I had to add another 1 Liter or so of engine oil. I already checked the oil sump and oil filter to make sure nothings leaking there.

Can anyone recommend why my engines burning oil so quick? Is my oil too thin and should i change to a 10W-40 oil? What engine oil do other em1 owners use?

Way to thin, try magnatec 10w-40 it's more thicker and doesn't burn as quick. That's what iv been using on my teg.

okay this is what i think you have done

if you did the oil change yourself***

i think you changed the oil filter and drained the oil from the sump
put the plug back in and droped it to the ground then filled the oil and checked it then and looked like it was good to go ....

you then turned the car on and the oil will then fill the oil filter ..where some stays as it circulates
then this caused what you thought was full to drop a bit on the dip stick
checked again and it was low.

    possible..

5-30 is too thin for a normal 180,000k engine IMO
Go get some 10-30 or 10-40 max and swap it in to make sure , while you are underneath check for obvious oil weeping from sump plug or oil filter -

My em1 i use penrite 15-50 semi never burns the oil, even at 10,000km change (i got lazy) the sump gave me nearly the same back as i gave it. But i would check the sump, in between the oil filter and the throttle body there a sensor, check around there to see if its greasy.

BTW car sitting aprrox 153xxx km's

theres two problems here - they have both been mentioned above

    first
your oil filter needed a chance to fill up

    second
the oil is too thin - i went to Honda FEO Ultra 5w30 and it chewed through it, was too thin and cleaned it out - after 5k kms of chewing oil i decided to change back to normal Honda FEO 10w30 and its all back to normal
just use Honda FEO 10w30 in the future - its good stuff

I recommend genuine honda (Y) 10-30, stuck to genuine honda oil and never had a problem once.

    10W-40, always best middle-ground IMO.

Hey guys still need help please.

I tried changing from castrol edge 5w-50 to 10w-40 magnetec but its still chewing up the oil (close to 1L in 3 weeks). I've checked under the car around the sump and oil filter and didn't see any leaks what so ever. I also checked around the seals on the rocket cover and thats also dry. I took it to the mechanic he also had a look around and wasn't able to find any leaks, he also got me to rev the car and black smoke was blowing out but he had NO suggestions on what may be wrong.

Anyone else have any other suggestions on what may be wrong or has anyone had this problem before? (I use this as a daily so i'm not really thrashing it around or anything).

Pressure/leak-down test? See if maybe it's leaking around the piston rings, or head gasket or w/e?

Keep it below 3000RPM for now. My friend use some sort of 'Stop Smoke' additive which gave him a bit more time but you'll have to get it fixed.
