DC5R blowing smoke at top end???

Hey all,

Was just going for a cruise through the mountains yesterday, and a mate following me told me that when the car reached the top end of the rev range it would blow smoke from the exhaust... I never knew about this, probably coz its hard to see the exhaust while driving lol. But I was just wondering what could cause something like this? It only happens from about 6k onwards. The car has a tuned kpro, but otherwise has stock internals, just a few bolt on parts. Any ideas? Or is it normal? Cheers.

Been doing some searching, most are saying its normal.. Can anyone confirm this?

Color of smoke?

Was it heaps or just a bit (Heaps = You can't see the car behind the smoke)

Did it have a smell?

Was there a lot?

More then likely it's just unburnt fuel and oil.

Yes it is normal. Above 6000rpm when on high cam (vtec), the ECU changes to a richer fuel mapping to compensate for the increased air available and also a bit more to protect the engine from pinging.

should only be a small amount i think. Me and a few of my friends have dc5's and they all blow smoke during vtec, mainly in first gear, not so much other gears

Yeah it's not much and it's black. Seemed to happen when I shifted down from 6th to 3rd to punch it out of a corner or if I revved hard through 1st and 2nd. So nothing to worry about then???

Black smoke comes from unburnt fuel. Nothing to worry about. If you see white or blue smoke, then start worrying a little bit (but not too much).

Check your rear bumper, if its running really rich then it would be full black, above the exhaust side. As said above, its perfectly normal

Yeah there's no buildup around the Muffler at all. Just a bit of a puff when I gun it. All good though just wanted to be sure. Cheers.

mine blows blue smoke when i first start it its standard with an injen cai- its been siting in my garage for a few months due to loss of licence and has a very un even idle, i was wondering what the blue smoke would mean? it only last for like the firsdt 2 or 3 minutes after started from cold

From what ive been reading, blue smoke means your car is burning oil. A compression or leak down test should be able to isolate where the problem is.

Blue smoke = oil burn, what oil are you using?

As far as I know there's no way a different intake could cause oil to burn on idle? sure it's not just a little bit of fuel mixed with condensation? in which case it would be a light grey due to it only being a little bit of extra fuel. cars usually use more fuel on cold start, and if it's got a hondata I've read somewhere that hondata's make use of even more fuel on cold start.
