I'm sorry that this has happened to you, as it's an awful thing to do to someone's car, but you've bitten off more than you can chew in several ways. $6000 worth of insurance should have told you immediately that you'd be wasting your time and money, not to mention the fact that your mechanic seems to have seen you coming.
