Yeah definately sounds like the thrust bearing.. I've worked on another s2k with the same problem. Replaced thrust bearing and was all good afterwards..

It will be interesting to hear whether the problem turns out to be the thrust bearing or main shaft bearing. From the description of the problem it sounds like main shaft as Boo5ha said.

Trust bearings are noisy only when the clutch is NOT pushed in. When it's pushed in there is tension on it and the noise stops. Even if you rest your foot in the pedal very lightly does the noise stop?

No, I find the noise only goes away when my foot is all the way in the clutch

To me it sounds like the trust bearing. Get another mechanic to check it out..
Hope it all works out alright.

Mate i wouldn't stress that much about it. If its not too noisy and only when your car is still and not in gear. Mine does it too. I just got my gearbox and clutch changed with a new spigot and thrust bearing. Same noise is there. The cost of changing it would be the same labor as changing a clutch. Have to drop the gearbox and get the clutch out to change the thrust bearing. If its mainshaft the labor of pulling the gearbox apart. Its not critical. Also need to understand the gearbox / clutch area is pretty much exactly where we sit inside the small cabin of the S and we can hear all the mechanics working.
i don't get my reputation points from spam threads.

i was wondering could i just change the shaft bearing and thrust bearing instead of paying for a new gearbox which is used anyways?
