whats your intention with the car, do ya plan a track day or 2 ?, what sort of kms will ya do a year. I went threw your dilema 4 months ago, with my VTi and ended up with some RP01 16x7 and a set of 205/50 Federal RSR, this rubber is sticky and loves the track. There is a trade off as Im expecting only 30,000 out of them.
17s will look good thou. First mod you should do is replace the rear sway bar.
If you are running 16x7 then best tyre size for you would probably be 205/55/16. If you want a 'nice' look then you should be looking for 17 inch atleast, 16 inch is 4WD look.
Currently running Hankook RS2's on my 16x8.5 Buddy P1's, 205/50/16, which I also ran on my 16x8 gram light 57s'. Feels better than my stock 17's running 215/40/17 Bridgestone re001's, also feels better than the 215/45/17 yoko S drives I have on my regamasters. Steering is much lighter, ride is slightly more comfortable.
Nice and grippy in the dry, not noisy, in the wet they're okay. Only bad point would be the wear, they're quite a soft compound. I think I'd get maybe 30,000km out of them, hard driving? Great tyre for the price though.
Not 100% sure if anywhere still stocks them. But tirerack.com sells the newer version RS3's...
The FD1 uses 205/55 R16 as stock. So either stick to that size or go 225/50 R16. The other combinations recommended here will throw your speedometer reading off. Their cars are not even FD1's.
