    Question worth looking at?

hey - looking at buying first car at the moment and have become quite fixated on the civic hatchbacks..
budget is about 5k (excuse my poor student status) and curious as to whether a '92 EG GLI for around 4k (160k km) is worth the buy, or is it better to have a look for a newer model?
    thanks!

4k is a too much for 92 gli. How the cars condition? paint ? inside ? mechanically ?
Have a look at newer model, but if you you eg like me, just look for good condition car and get it. Have a mechanic to have a look at the car before buying.

4k way too much for a GLI unless interior and paint is immaculate with genuine super low km. Is 4k the listing price? Cos if you can lowball him like 3k it could still be a good buy.

I love the EG hatch shape and despite them being old i still bought one. But i made the mistake of inspecting the car carefully enough/getting professional pre-purchase inspection so spend that extra $200 or so for peace of mind. Personally i would not pay more than 3-3.5k for a GLI in top condition, around 4k for a VTi. Don't even bother with the GL imo

Yes do not even bother with GL, do not buy a carbie civic. Look for vti, si. which should come with rear disc brakes and better performance compared to gli. For 4 k you should be getting a car with rwc and 12 month rego and better eg depends on the condition.

Lol better performance... VTi for sunroof! At the end of the day, all EGs are slow with stock engines. But with rear disc brakes you can do the BREMBO mod for +25kW

vti has 25 hp+- more than gli.
All civic are slow, but more power is always better.

$5,000 I'd get a DC4 GSI Integra personally, but if you insist on the hatch thing then get a VTi unless you can get an engine-converted one for similar price.

Out of curiosity, do you like DC2/4's?

yeah advertised for 4.5k so i would assume he'd negotiate lower, comes with road worthy, rego til april, says central locking, power windows, air con, etc, and sunroof..

out of curiosity, how much does an engine conversion cost?

Sunroof on a gli? Aftermarket sunroofs have a propensity to leak.

The cost of an engine conversion depends on the engine being put in. Wouldn't even bother with it if you're in 'poor student status'

ps. is your last name swan by any chance?

depends on what you want. B16 conversion kits are usually somewhere in the 3K mark, and the type r's B18C7 can be had for around 5.5K. I'd go for the integra vtir's engine, the B18C2, costs around 4.5K and almost the same as a type r's engine

btw eg gli with sunroof...im going to guess that there's been an aftermarket roof fitted onto it (someone correct me if im wrong and the sunroof was factory optional for gli). Usually (well in my experience) aftermarket roofs are complete poo, and since the car is almost 20 years old id say it wont be in the best condition (i had one lol). Just check it out though, to be sure. Never know, you might have a car that's been babied all its life

this car buying thing is the biggest headscrew of my entire life
