There's a lot to be gained from calling a mechanic, googling, trying the OH search engine etc. But the best advice comes from this community. If I need to know something I try to search here but it's hard to find the exact answer or key words sometimes.
Old heads need to realize that they are valued to the point that a noob wants to turn to them first for the best anecdotal information. Don't turn these people away! OH is a resource for all and should be used preferentially to google IMO.
The very lightheartedness you speak of is what's at stake when people choose to disrespect one another.
