Is it really? Is that a question they ask in the insurance application? Im a couple years older than an average uni student and my insurance is only $1200 (SGIC). Unless it is different here in SA - they are still 4 cylinder N/As so i dont understand how it is so expensive?
so what happens when you crash and they don't pay out? its like paying $800 a year for nothing

You actually just pay an excess premium on top of your excess. Eg 700 normal excess + 1200 excess for unlisted driver under the age of 25 if you chose that cover. And even then the Premium per year is under 1000.

Correct, like i stated its a risk you've got to weigh up if its worth taking or not... Drive sensibly and you should be fine.. worse case scenario your excess is 3k but if you dont have an accident for 2-3 years and your premium is 3k youve already saved
