ek hatch boot release cable- how do you make it tighter?

The other day my boot cable (from the drivers side door to the rear hatch) I believe just stretched, I never replaced it and it still pulls it but not enough to open the boot. I was gonna strip it all apart but just to save time and hassle did anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it? Cheers.

Why don't you just go to the boot side of the cable, take the cable out, trim some of the cable off and reattach it to the latch?

That what I was going to do but I thought I check it out first before cutting
