    FYI VT3C and others interested:

I owned an AE93 Corolla SX in which I had a conversion completed,
The Toyota 20v is the last of the 4AGE 1600 family with 5 valves per cylinder and 4 throttle intake, they are actually VVT engines, meaning the the inlet camshaft has variable timing only. It is programmed to activate initially at about 3500rpm with adjustment also made about 5000rpm and also 7900rpm, on the way to 8200rpm cutout, and believe me the last 3000rpm are very noticable, however an aftermarket tuned properly is said to flatten out the bumpy torque curve and give up to something like 15fwkw increase i''ve heard. Known as the "siver top" 160hp (factory claim) it's a great little engine with great response and surprising low down torque helped by a close ratio 5 speed. The later "black top" was the same with revised ecu and I think VVT-i giving the ability to vary timing anywhere depending on throttle position, lightweight cams & valves, stonger valve springs and made another 10hp to about 170hp (factory claim) plus a 6 speed box.

    Here's some pics

if you after efficiency - all turbos out the window.
its a bit of a random question though cos if you are looking for the best engine design you have to look at NA's and the ability to produce power without FI.
all the hero turbo 4 cylinders are crap in their NA form

    but in any case
    FI - 4G63T
    NA - F20C / K20

although there are toyota and nissan engine which look just as good on paper, in practice they dont quite make it - crap power bands / gear ratios and reliablity
