    Yes the boot is just a cover and the most common fault is that it has just torn.

    Hook all the way to the left and accelerate, then all the way to the right. Any noise?

    The boot is holding all the grease that lubricates that joint.

    smell it, ps fluid has distinct annoying smell
    looks like your steering rack needs a rebuild cos seal is leaking. fluid comes from steering rack and pools up in the boot, then leaks out from boot.

    oh, dont need the boot clamp tool. great if you have it but for steering rack zip tie is good enough. oem use spring clip.
    def need clamp tool for cv joint boot.
