The problem is caused by warped disk rotors. The ticking noise is the caliper sliding left and right on the anchor pins. This can happen on either front or rear (Disk brake only).
To check the front just jack it up and place it on jack stands. Start the car and put in first gear. visually inspect for caliper movement through the wheel spokes. This can be done with the wheels off. Be Careful.
For the rear do the same but spin the wheels by hand.
