As for the clutch assuming the two mechanics you had look at it are mates, get them to price a clutch from repco, autopro etc trade price is regularly cheaper than Internet vendor prices, well worth a phone call anyway.
Went under the bay today, couldn't see any viable leaks coming from around the plate or gearbox at all. Neighbour who was an ex mech said everything seems fine and it's probably just an old clutch on its way. Cleaned the whole engine bay to make sure nothing could be just burning up. Haven't smelt it since then but giving it time. Thanks for the help guys, I've got a pretty sound idea of my options if I start slipping gears
