It reduces body roll, in the case of a rear sway bar, the roll of the car is resisted by the torsional (twisting) action of the sway bar that attempts to lift the inside rear wheel. Some cars require stabilizers to steady the chassis against front end roll and sway on turns. Stabilizers are designed to control this centrifugal tendency that forces a rising action on the side toward the inside of the turn. When the car turns and begins to lean over, the sway bar uses the upward force on the outer wheel to lift on the inner wheel, thus keeping the car more level.
mm.. still bit confused, would it help under/over steer?
from what it sounds like, it neutralises roll and creates balance, but balance at the cost of the rear not moving as much, so i'm thinking it gives understeer? but then again because of the more stable rear the front has more potential to grip so all in all what effect would a rear sway bar give?

A larger rear bar aides understeer and provokes oversteer - where a larger front is the opposite in effect ...
so you would get both to assist role and it would equal out
upgraded both front and rear is a great mod ( been in the Admin's car many-a-time and the turn in is great ) but as stated , with a FWD car with its tendency to understeer its best to upgrade only the rear with a larger unit to counteract
Get a larger front and it probably leaves you wanting a LARGER rear one still !
LOL
ok now i understand
am i right in saying there is already a sway bar on the front of a DC2 VTIR
i just ordered a 22mm rear swaybar so that will be good then :P

sorry for the n00bness
there are both front and rear factory sway bars there now... just replace the rear with the 22mm aftermarket one... it's about twice as thick as standard.
