Half the time when they "recondition" and alternator they only replace the brushes, but everything on an alternator that wears is more or less replaceable.

Loosen the belt and spin the alternator with your hand if the bearing is going it will most likely feel rough. You will need or improvise a press to replace the rear bearing.

If you get a reconditioned unit make sure it has the correct pulley.
