Installing splits. Lost power to head unit. Please help!

hey guys.
i need a bit of help!
in my g/f Daihatsu, i fitted my old splits. The splits consist of 2 tweeters, 2 speakers and 2 mini amp looking things.

in the amp thing there are 6 slots, 2 for input and 4 for output. They are.. Tweeter (neg and pos(output)), Woofer/speaker (neg and pos(output)) and Input (neg and pos(input)). As these speakers were previously used on my car, all the wires are connected already. So the neg and pos slots on both the tweeter and woofer were wired upto the tweeter and speaker, making life easier.

my g/f has a Kenwood head unit which autobarn installed for her a few months back.

where the OEM speakers were in her car, i soldered the end of the pos and neg wires of the input slots to the wires that originally lead to the OEM speaker.

I placed the amp thing in the inside of the door using double sided tape and mounted the speakers on the inside of her side mirrors on the plastic moulding part.

Everything worked fine.. but what me being the idiot i am, didnt think about the window (btw, they are power windows), when they came down, they pulled the tweeter wires out of the amp thing. I pulled the door down again in the passenger side, rewired the tweeters and made sure everything was fine, i made sure the wires were dodging the windows path and everything was ok. i turned the stereo on to make sure it worked and it was working ok. While the music was on, i tryed winding the passenger power window down and it just cut out. i immediately looked to see if i could see smoke from the amp thing or anything else in the door, i couldnt, i couldnt smell anything burnt. The speaker seemed to be working fine before it cut out.

What has happened though, i dont think is something with the speaker itself. I am getting no power at all to the headunit. When i turn the ignition to Acc. there is nothing, no display, nothing. I wired up the driver side door as i did the passenger to fix the window prob.

My question is. What have i done?
I thought, maybe i knocked a wire, but the stereo was working fine until i wound down the window, is it possible the window knocked a wire?
Has something shorted out?
What could i try and do to fix this?

Any info/help would be very very appreciated as my g/f has cracked the shits big time and wont stop whinging at me about it now lol. i also dont really wanna pay to take it to a specialist

the amp thing is actually a crossover network, or at least thats what it says on the box

you have most probably just blown a fuse. When the wire came out it probably came into contact with metal and BAM! lol. other than that a wire may have fallen out. Oh, and those amp looking things are called crossovers, they filter the treble to the tweeters, and the more bassy notes to the larger (woofer) speakers).


So just check all your fuses first. Dont forget theres a fuse box under the hood as well as just next to the steering wheel so have a look in both.

ok, thanks mugeneration.. ill check all the fuses first. it was just the tweeters that came out of the crossover, so i dont see how that would stop the head unit from powering or blow a fuse? hmm, if the fuses dont solve it do u think i should pull the head unit out and check the wires in behind there? what a hassle, i hate wiring, lol..

i think u could be right with the fuse.. i just dont understand how.. if i put a new one in there and it blows, i got problems.

Sounds like a blown fuse. Make sure you check the fuse on the back of the HU aswell as the ones under the dash and in the engine bay.

It would have been very easy for a fuse to blow if a wire was yanked out of the crossover. Think about it, the negative side of the power to the HU travels through the chassis of the car so if one of the speaker connections touches the chassis, you get a circuit between the -ve power run and the amp which shouldn't be there and pop goes your fuse you could also have gotten a short btwn the power running through the electric window mechanism and the HU..

if it had of touched the chassis when it came out. when i re-wired it, wouldnt it have blown as soon as i turned the head unit on? It was playing for prob about 10 - 20 secs until i wound the window down?

i still gotta look at it havent had her car here to do it. Probably tomorrow. Im really hoping its a fuse and that when i replace it it'll be fine.

I hope its not a short between the elec. window and stereo coz it'll be a bastard to find.

as long as you fix all the wires then it wont blow again.

ok.. heres the story so far. checked all the fuses i could.. check the main fuse box (dash) and the fuse box under the bonnet. All seem to be ok, but.. i couldnt work out which were to the radio heres what they are...

Dash:
1. Fog lamp 15A
2. Tail lamp 10A
3. Defogger 15A
4. Power window 30A
5. Gauge and Back up 10A
6. Engine 10A
7 Spare 10A (Had a fuse, seemed to be fine)
8. Spare 15A (Had a fuse, seemed to be fine)
9. Wiper and Turn signal lights 20A
10. Heater 20A
11. Accessary 15A (Thought it could be this one, seems to be fine)
12. Head light (left) 10A
13. Head light (right) 10A
14. ECU ignition 10A
15. Air bag 10A
16. Door lock 15A

Hood:
1. Fuel pump relay
2. Day light 10A
3. EFI 15A
4. Back up 10A
5. Stop light 15A
6. MGC 10A (For Air con)
7. Horn Hazard 15A
8. RAD Relay
9. EFI main relay
10. Starter relay (For auto trans)
11. MGC relay (For air con)
12. AM 60A
13. ABS 50A
14. Tail light 40A
15. Head light 30A
16. RAD 30A

So now i gotta pull the dash down which i havent done before to see the fuse in the back of the head unit. i hope its that fuse, coz this will take me a while to do. What a pain in the ass. Im gonna double check my wiring right now before i do it though.

Any suggestions on anything i should do? or does anyone know of any of those fuses that would be for the radio?

Sorry, there were also a couple of fuses hanging sort of off wires under the dash near the fuse box also, they seemed to be fine also, im not sure what they are actually for.

ok, now its getting annoying, checked the wiring between the x-over and the tweeter, woofer and input.. all wired up fine.. checked the fuse in the back of the head unit, fine.

Now i dont know what to do. Im thinking that one of the fuses is blown, and i must have missed it or it looks ok but isnt, anyone have any ideas on what i can check? anything at all? before i head down to autobarn.

problem solved.

it had me lost, i didnt know what was wrong, i pulled the face off the headunit and the security light was on and i thought.. wtf, some power must be going to it then?!?!

i pulled the fuse out and made sure all the wires were in properly etc (on the back of the HU) and then switched the ignition to acc. It started up. WOOHOO! all speakers working perfectly.

U know what i reckon it was. i remember fiddling with the HU and its options, and i think i put a code or something on it somehow? and when i reset the power, it reset the code. Because when it came on it said, "code off". This doesnt explain why it cut out in the middle of listening to music though, just out of nowhere? Either that, or i somehow pulled a wire out and then when fiddling, connected it back up.

Doesnt matter, the problem is fixed, well for now at least :P
