heres what i got told at the honda dealer:
the current FEO stuff is too thin (10-30w) and the car would consume oil if i used it . the oil that was reccomended to me was castrol gtx3 15-40w
so thats the stuff i use.. not expensive either.

ITs a fact that the FEO oil is alittle thin for older engines...and does get drunk by our old "ZC's" - well , im my experience anyway.

I don't really want to confuse you. but this is just my experience:

With the EK4, I used to use Mobil 1 10W30 (gold label stuff only available from the distributor) which I religiously changed it every 5000km.

It only came in 1L bottles or 20L drums. I know the way i drove it, it probably didnt need an oil change that soon, but I'm just @nal

In the good 'ol days (i know mobil have modified their formula recently) the Mobil 1 5W50 and 15W50 from KMart and such wasnt strictly speaking a "full synthetic".

The 10W30 gold label oil was good stuff, you can actually feel the difference (probably cos the oil was thinner too). It just revved up alot free-er with less restriction. from my highly inaccurate seat_of_my_pants dyno, mid range torque felt noticeably stronger too.

With the KMart mobil 1 stuff I used to get a fair bit of oil consumption too, with the 10W30, so such problems.

i believe the 10w-30 mobil is on sale now at certain distributors for about $85/5L. i'm going to try it out for my next change.

up till now i've been running around with castrol formula R 5w-30 with no complaints.

mobil1 semi synthetic 5w-50 and shell helix ultra needed about 1000ml added every 5k km. the castrol usually needs about 500ml in the same period.

i don't know what the deal is there, but i feel better about using the castrol.

    Ginganggooly,
is this the new Mobil 1 with SuperSyn?
anyone tried this oil and how was it?

The castrol formula R 5w30 that you are using, is that the one in the new bottle? cos I believe castrol rebadged all their oils with the "R" name.
In the old castrol bottles there was an SLX (10W30) that was pretty good stuff too, about comparable to the Mobil 1 10W30.

I've been running around on Castrol R 10W60 in the S15 for 20,000km now and its pretty good, never needs a top up either.
