I'm no gear expert but i remembered reading something about helical gears vs straight-cut gears and how they work. But i've did some researching on the net and found a site that explains it, or atleast i think it does, couldn't be bothered reading it all. :P

i think everyone has noticed a similar sound on various car but not as loud
but i think the EM1 sounds much louder than most other cars (at least all those i have noticed/driven) so its more unusual, and tends to make ppl worry more
