    epa 90db exhaust limit

i have recently been defect for the "excessive exhaust noins on my teg type R. totay i attempted to get it passed by the epa...... i thought that putting a silencer in the cannon would do this but aparently not. i got 96.3 DB, when the legal limit is 90. so in an endevour to clear my defect i have just put a mild steel funnel that tapers from 2.5" to 1.5"and stuffed some household steel wool in the piiping.
if it doesnt pass now ill be a monkeys uncle. BUT my question is will this restrict the exhaust to a point that is may cause harm to the engine? and will the steel wool catch alight due the level of heat an exhaust produces? keeping in mind these are only tempary untill i get my 3" exhaust on after i put in my turbo on the car , and the car is not driven currently as i have lost my licence (my dad took it to the EPA).
Any input would be welcome at this point as i am quite worried.

Firstly, what exhaust system do you have at the moment? Do you have headers? Who fitted the exhaust system?

Secondly, you should never stuff steel wool (or any other sort of material that can catch fire) into your muffler. If you have received an EPA notice, don't try and cut corners to get the exhaust quiet. If you only have to go to an approved exhaust shop, you may get off light as some are lenient. But some are quite strict and will not pass you. Not only that but if you go to an EPA station for the test and they find out what you have done, you can risk a considerable fine.

I'd take the car back to a decent exhaust shop and get it tested for any leaks. If the exhaust system doesn't leak, ask for their advice as they fit exhaust systems all day, every day and know what is legal and what isn't. Cheap and nasty mufflers/exhaust systems can often result in illegal noise emissions as they haven't passed proper testing.

well it is stock piping with a high flow cat + headers and a cannon with a silencer and like i said it missed out by about 6.5 db's....... irealise the laws are there for a reason but they are inforced down to the word..... there needs to be a noise rate that is tollarable whist being perfomance increasing.
anyways that was not my question .... will the steel wool burn?
p.s vti_2 as i said above im not trying to do the dodgee on the epa station just a temp fix till i get my new exhaust system fitted in 2 weeks.

i had the same problem with my integra except mine had a reading of 107 db......so what i did was find an axle back exhaust from an eg hatch, cut it just after the flange and weld a bit of piping on to make it fit and hang.....did the test and got a reading of 85......then after the test replaced the old one....thats probly your best solution if u wanna keep the other exhaust

Nonsense, Steel wool won't catch fire, not from exhaust temperatures anyway. If you look at the construction of performance mufflers, you'll find that most of them are glass packed. if glass doesn't catch fire, its less likely STEEL will catch fire.

Anyway, I used to pack my own mufflers with steel wool internals and glass fibre wrap around.

Chill out mate, i didn't say steel wool will catch fire. I said not to stuff "other" material that can catch fire into the muffler.

and if all he's doing is stuffing stuff down the exhaust, he's either going to end up with a ruined exhaust or everything just blows out...flammable or not..

    Hahaha...

Your first problem is you most likely have a rice canon on ya car. They do nothing to silence the car. My mate had a teg vtir with standard exhaust and headers and he got 89db. Once he put his exhaust and rice muffler on it was so loud it souded like woks were flying out the bak of the car. Dont be a tight ass or a fool, put a stock exhaust on til u turbo the car cos itll prob even work better than the shit u got on there now.
