WTF: Engine oil as Tranny oil!?!?

Went down to the dealer for some MTF manual tranny oil for my CD Accord.

They didn't have any in stock. The rep told me to use engine oil in place tranny oil. Is it true you can do that?

From my humble understanding:

Engine oil: 10w-30 <---honda oil
Tranny oil: 70w-80 <---Honda MTF

Any comments?

i have had this at honda before.

some wank gave me diff oil and told me it was tranny oil

you can use it it will work have done it before
prbably want be the best for it
but i did it once and it stoped the crunch in the box it was in a city

Its common among other cars models to use it.. same as other cars auto tranny fluid is used in exchange for power steering fluid .. for hondas i personally wouldn't use anything than the specific fluid for your application. In particular power steering fluid.

Like the others said, tell the guy to get off his ass and order you some. If your really really desperate it is better than no fluid (of course).

Tranny oil: 70w-80 is this rating for all honda's? Cause from my machanic's manual it say it's the same as the engine oil for 92-98 integra's. Type R wasn't listed, just said use honda recommended oil.

go open up the honda factory service manual. I know at least for the civics, it lists 10w-30(maybe it was 10w-40... don't remember off hand) as the replacement fluid for the tranny fluid.

honda mtf fluid may work better, but normal oil works perfectly fine.

its either labelled ENGINE OIL or TRANSMISSION FLUID... use it for what the bottle says

Ive always used normal engine oil (Mobil 1 synth) in my MT Tranny - and have had no problems. Gear changes are perfectly fine.

My Honda mechanic says its fine to do it, and does it to all Honda's he services.

10 years ago Honda didnt have MTF. we put FEO in all MT boxes. no problems on normal boxes.

unleas your GB is rooted use an oil that best suits your BOX either MTF or FEO. be carfull what other oils you put in it.
