engine oil and gear oil have DIFFERENT "sae" ratings,

but can be the SAME viscosity:

Lighter oil can generally be used for gearboxes, but they usually use thicker oil so that it does not burn. I've heard from a honda mechanic that they usually use thinner oil in gear boxes with problems. He told me that generally he uses a fully syntheic oil in all his cars but only uses engine oil in gboxes with problems.

btw they colour gbox oil. I used the penrite gearbox oil and it is a yellow colour.

I have even heard of mixing some auto box oil with manual gbox oil to help with crunching also.

Personally i only use a fully synthetic oil in my gbox. Castrol syntrax or redline gearbox oil.
