identify year of make?

i ve done some search already but narrows down to my part of the question with no answers.

blardy noob question but ive finally sourced a jdm b16a coming out of a eg6... its just the engine not a front cut
my chasis is 94' but i dont seem to know how i can find out the make year of the engine. since with legal issues its illegal to put an engine thats older then ur chasis make year. i stuck for now. could some please help me out a bit.

what ways/things could i look out for to determine its yr besides asking the man whose selling it to me?

i ve seen it already, but the thing is it has B16A stamped then under it is another code eg: 541626... so on.
