Scrubbing at the front

Hi Guys.

I've recently got a set of Tein SS coilovers installed. Now that they've bedded in...im getting some scrubbing at times when there are passengers in the car. The scrubbing occurs only at the front, the back has no probs at all.

To fix this i was thinking of making my front shocks stiffer, by say 3-5 clicks.

My questions are:
1. Will this solve my problem?
2. Will I feel a big difference in ride comfort?
3. Does this do any damage to my coilovers?
4. Is there any other way to eliminate scrubbing other than raising the car?

On a side note, to all those people that dunno whether 2 get coilovers or just a spring/shock setup....if you have the $$$.....GET COILOVERS. Especially if you end up in a situation like me....where by if you got non-adjustable shocks / springs...you'd be pretty pissed right now....but Im cheering coz i got full adjustability and even tho i have a bit of a problem, i kno if worst comes to worst, i can fix it by raising the car a lil

Dude, well you got some fundamental issues in terms of alloy wheel fitment in the front. Either they are too wide OR the offset is too low OR its a combination of both. If you want to keep ur rims, you may have to drive the4 car a lil' higher.

Does it rub when the wheels are pointed straight or only when turning?

it doesnt scrub at all if im driving normally. it scrubs say if im going downhill and at the end of the hill say i take a LEFT turn, so if i dont substantially slow down for that turn, then my front RIGHT tyre will scrub on the guard.

In my mind the reason is that the shock / spring compresses too much...as its setting is not hard enough....so i figured that if i make the shock / spring stiffer...it wont compress as much...causing less if no scrubbing at all

Before i had it lowered, i never had issues with scrubbing at the front

A stiffer setting may then fix it. Does it scrub much or just a tad? I small increase in stiffness prolly won't make much difference to handling but any more may cause it to "hop" over bumps/holes.

The scrubbing varies on how fast im approaching the corner, and on how big the dip is at the bottom of the hill which im turning from. Say if im coming down a hill angled 15-20 degrees, and at the bottom theres a dip, which leads to a left 270 degree bend around the corner. If I take that bend around at 35-40km/h....then ill scrub a fair bit...if however i take it at the recommended 20-25km then ill be fine.

To give you an example, imagine the corner of forest road and king georges road, where you are driving down forest road (heading AWAY from Hurstville), down a slight hill and take a left turn at the lights....thats the kind of corner that i get scrubbing on if i take it at speed.

My advice would be to:
1) Make it stiffer by a little
2) make it a little higher as well (0.5cm maybe)
3) SLOW DOWN

I was told by my mechanic (Indy @ IS Motor Racing) that the coilovers will drop an extra 5mm due to bedding in, and the ride will become bit softer also.

So taking those 2 things in mind....im going to:
1. raise it all round by 5mm...since it never scrubbed that bad the first few times i drove (before they bedded in)...

2. make the front stiffer by 4 clicks, and the rear by 2 clicks...so the front and rear springs wont compress so much resulting in less scrubbing, and less chance of me scraping the muffler on a drive-way or a speed hump

3. I don't normally speed, and never track...but sometimes i just feel like taking some corners with my new coilovers ...haha

1. why dont u just raise it up by a bit i raised mine by 1 cm and a made a differences

2. why dont u put it on the hardest setting, mine is and it doesnt bother me and my gf at all.

first thing check if the scrubbing is coming from the side of the tyre or the outside of the tyre...

sounds like the outside of the tyre....you can roll your guards and that should eliminate the problem.

Ye, i considered rolling the front guards. But
a) If I can fix this without spending any more $$$...id rather do that
b) I've asked my panel beating guy, and he strongly advised against rolling the front guards on a civic, he said there's a high probability the paint will get screwed up

I think ill go with retuning the sussy first..If that doesnt help...THEN i will consider rolling the guards.

When my mechanic installed the coilovers, he said he'll make it a 2 finger gap all round, however i think there is 1/2 a finger gap at the rear, and 1.5 finger gap at the front. Reason y the rear is lower is prolly due 2 the sub at the bak. and reason y its 1.5 at the front insted ov 2 is prolly since the springs now sagged those 5mm he was on bout. So as i said earlier, ill prolly raise 5mm all round and change the stiffness
