    DIY: Steering Rack Boot (Replace)

Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

    Aim: Replace steering rack boot

Required: New Boot, socket set, ball joint remover (or cow bar and sledge hammer), grease (Castroll LMM, used for CV joints and BALL JOINTS)

    Steps:

    1. Remove wheel and raise car. Put the car on stands!!

    2. Remove the bolt holding the tie rod onto the steering knuckle.

    3. Remove the tie rod from the knuckle using a ball joint remover.

    4. Unscrew the tie rod from the steering rack.

    5. Mark the position of the "bolt" on the steering rack.

    6. Remove old boot (You may need to Break the straps holding it on. The back strap is more accesible from the engine bay) and remove breather hose from the boot.

    7. Cover the steering racks thread with tape so it doesnt damage the small end of the new boot.

    8. If its dirty, remove the grease from the ball joint, and apply some new grease.

    9. Slide the new boot over the rack and tighten with new clamps. re-attatch breather hose onto the new boot.

    10. Remove the tape off the racks thread and put the "bolt" back untill the position you marked.

    11. Tighten the tie rod onto the steering rack (the "bolt" wont let it screw on further than where you marked it)

    12. Attatch the tie rod to the steering knuckle, put your wheel on, and lower your car.

    13. Go get a wheel allignment. It will be out as u messed with the tie rods.

    nice work,

you dont have to do a wheel alignment if you count the turns it takes to take off the tie rod ends and put them back on the same way.

    great work.
