correct me if i am wrong, but its to stop the whole exhaust system from moving, the headers are attached to the engine, which moves, esp when revved. so the flexi-pipe prevents the whole exhaust from moving which would happen if it was all solid.
So the exhaust system has separate movement compared to the engine. Without the flex-pipe, under stress there would be no 'give' in the exhaust system to flex seperately from the engine so the exhaust would be more prone to cracking, especially at the dump pipe/manifold/headers.
Befor i got my flexy pipe i broke the mounts off my exhaust and snaped one m,andrel bend
then i got a flexy and then that flexy even broke coz of too much launching and stuff finally i got a heavy duty dubble braded flexy and no probs to date
