accord euro 7th gen vs corolla sportivo 03/04

Hey guys im about to buy a new car..I want something 4door with abit of space..and some power

Ive narrowed it down to an euro or sportivo and im stuck

corolla cons
around $13 to $15
6speed manual
1.8(cheaper to run?)
Smaller car(less wear and tear service cost?)
more sporty looking

euro
around $13
More spacios
5speed manual(relaxing)
2.4 dont need to rev the **** out of it to get power
nice long legs for country driving

So my question is what do you guys think?
never driven a euro so whats it feel like? bit and heavy? hows the power ive driven a k24 on ek and boy it goes! lol but how about on euro.?
hows the 5speed auto? sluggish? do they come tiptronic?
and lastly fuel and service cost?

i will say go for the sportivo for your budget.

you'll probably find the sportivo more fun than the euro

Yeah leaning towards sportiv. Found one for 14k 100,000ks all standard mint cond is that a fair price?

That sounds like a good price for a sportivo! they seem to mostly be around 18k from the ones i've seen. BTW the manual euro is a 6 speed, not a 5 (unlike the auto). The auto box does come with tiptronic, it is a very smooth ride but not a lot of fun.. more of a nice cruisey car.

The manual euro has a bit of torque (just a little bit :P), but being a relatively small engine for the size/weight of the car you do need to give it a bit for some power, but it'd probably be similar in the corolla, albeit the corolla being more fun due to its lighter weight :)

In terms of fuel, I'm not too sure about the sportivo, but I constantly get around 10km/L in my euro, but do have a standard (non sportivo) Corolla in the family which no doubt delivers much better fuel economy than the euro.

I think at the end of the day it comes down to whether you want a fun or a luxury/cruising car. Sorry about the long post, didnt realise I was typing so much.. good luck! :D

the engine in those sportivos are amazing, they are even better when you buy the Toyota TRD Supercharger kit and Toyota TRD CAI (same as injen but oem yo) from a dealer and kit it out =)

its the engine used for the Celica ZR and Lotus Elise

the sportivo does have heavy leather seats ... u should find it on par with a EK VTIR performance wise

if you do go for a corolla opt for the facelifted model ... they are 100% nicer

wow.. i never heard vvti, sounds like 3 stage vtec? or is it more like a b-series vtec? awesome nonetheless!

corolla front end looks hot, rear.. not as much. euro's are nice, but there are so many around these days. good luck with your purchase, probably go test drive them both and see which one you like more. that way, you won't regret your decision once its been made.

i would consider a 4 door golf GTI as well =)

Go for the Sportivo, you'll have more fun with it. A Euro feels like a boat in comparison.

Don't pay too much for a sportivo because when they were new, they were only $29,990, while an Euro was $34500.

Sportivo's suspension is soft, but the engine is fun. No torque at all under 6000rpm and then suddenly you get a strong kick. Perfect for people who like vtec, but terrible if you are trying to out accelerate a camry to get into the next lane.

wouldnt it be better to compare the euro to camry and rolla to civic?????

this comp has an answered bassed on what u want out of the car, not which one is better, coz as far as i can tell these two cars are fighting in to differnt rings.....



get the euro anyways, corrolas are for old people.

camry drivers are the new volvo drivers ... they cant drive or they are 10000000 years old and cant even see ... i have so much trouble with them lol

Ok thanks guys leaning towards sportivo Going to have a look at one tommorow 14k 100,000ks new rego it's the white on on carsales...anything to look out for? Heard that 6speed is notorious for breaking? And the vvtli lift what does it feel like? Do you feel it kick ?

The corolla sportivo gearbox is terrible!!!! The Euro's manual gearbox is one of the best in shift feel.

Base Corolla is just as bad (I found the Sportivo's gearbox better). Felt quite loose. I used to rent manual Corollas very often, while my neighbour has a Sportivo.

i guess each to the own than.. cause i felt the 05 corolla (base) was better than the 04 euro

we have an automatic 2004 facelifted accent and its awsome ... not the best on performance but really comfortable and roomy for the size ... fantastic work and town car and its great on fuel as well

no idea what the manual ones are like but those facelift s'tivos look mean

i remember i rented a corolla once... the prefacelift one, and was quite impressed... zippy little motor, pretty bland, but very toyota like interior... wasnt too bad

the sportivo has the same running gear as the top of line late model celica... ive heard the gearing isnt right for the motor, it drops out of powerband at times... and no lsd which is a pain, but ive heard one in full flight and man, what a noise...

not in the same league as the euro in terms of performance in my opinion, but the it really does come down to what kind of car you want... the euro is a lovely cruiser

Took an 04 sportivo for a test drive very nice interiour nice comfy and roomy gearbox is abit wierd though not that smooth shifting but very impressed otherwise..he wants 15.500 with 125,000ks all standard 1lady owner seems a quite fare price..

Sounds alright but isn't great when you drive it...

I didn't like how the 2ZZ-GE had a big huff of nothing nor the feel of the 6spd which didn't feel positive if you get what I mean. I also complain the hardware surrounding this hotted up model isn't up to standard.

I did consider one as a daily but after driving both a stock one and my friend's bolt-on frenzy one, decided it wasn't worth my time. It definitely didn't meet what I want. The car I've got now blows it out of the water and that's before touching it...

pre facelift I think asked about it on toyota forums and they said just the looks are abit different thats it same engine,interior etc

I think I know what you mean about the gearbox abit clunky if you will...engine is great though and may I ask what car have you ended up with.?

That's what you get if an engine relies just on aggressive cams alone to give peak power and skimp on porting, weight reduction and balancing. :(

I can't confirm the crankshaft but I can confirm the rods are indeed semi-forged/forged (though I'm not sure what technique or material used).

I've got an AE111... Murders the Sportivo in every aspect you can think of then some o.O

only reason i ask about the facelift is that the older ones dont hold value as well as the facelift ... the facelift model wasnt around for as long so there are less of them ... and they look 100% better but thats personal opinion

mechanically there isnt much difference thats worth notice

The crankshaft is balanced on its own, but it is not balanced to the weight of the rod and piston on each cylinder position. The 2ZZ-GE is a mass production engine, without any of the loving care like what the DC2 Type R's engine gets.

hmm ae111 blacktop? I had an ae111 and ae101 hence my username and i wasent impressed at all i ended up with a redtop smallport non tvis 4age...so I have to dissagree with you on that

Why not? The Sportivo weighs 1225kg (pre-facelift) and with a power curve only a mother would love, the AE111 has a very good chance in beating it in the straights. When it comes to the corners, the AE111 would just pull away.

When I had me ae111 superztrut equiped I couldn't keep up with a dc2r on twistys lol in saying that haven't really driven a sportivo hard yet..

DC2R is a different animal altogether compared to the Sportivo. Not only is its engine much better throughout the low and mid-rpm rev range, the chassis is set up for handling from the factory, complete with additional spot welds and bracing.

As a person who has owned both....

The Euro is in a different league to the Sportivo....

One is renowned for its style and handling, the other is a tarted up base model.....

Toyota....F1 wins...0
Honda....lost count...

The Corolla was a few years ago, still impressive, but i luv my Euro....
The Euro runs rings around it on windy roads, with the handling and the more responsive engine. The Sportivo was fun, but it really is an all or nothing engine....I thought it made a lot of noise (nice sound though) and didn't do too much....
The Honda is a class above in refinement and go when you want it...:thumbsup:

the sportivo's engine is different to the basemodels engine ...
and its the same engine used as a base for the lotus elise and the same engine from the ZR Celica ... so its not all that bad ... but yeah i would say they are in different leagues

We know that and we are referring to the 2ZZ-GE engine, not the 1ZZ-FE one. But still, it is not a high performance engine where you get torque throughout the rev range. The 2ZZ-GE is more like a fun engine where you have heaps of peak torque and less everywhere else. That's why the Celica and Sportivo were not taken seriously as high performance cars. Plus, the chassis was not set up with a focus on handling. The chassis is a bit soft, while the Sportivo's springs and dampers are ultra comfy. I can actually get the front to lift up when I apply throttle at 2000rpm in 1st gear. I don't get this with the Euro, which implies the Euro has stronger damping than the Sportivo.

The Elise gets an engine remap to improve the mid-range RPM torque, but in reality, the low torque is not really an issue in the Elise because of the shorter gearing and lighter weight.

Anyway, back in 2004, I was about to put down coin on the Sportivo until a last minute decision which saw me buy the Euro instead.

Or you can have the torque at almost everywhere from 3000 up to 7000rpm compared to the Sportivo's narrow 6000 to 8200rpm window. If you look at even the paper specs, the Euro being 1395kg with 140kW (9.96 kg/kW) is able to have a similar 0-100km/h and 0-400m time to the Sportivo which weighs 1225kg and has 141kW (8.68 kg/kW). That is a big difference in power to weight, yet the acceleration times are almost identical (about 8.2 seconds 0-100km/h and 15.3 seconds 0-400m) which implies that the Sportivo has either a very poor engine power curve or very poor traction.

Interesting, I don't have an issue whatsoever in mine :) Even let my friends have a steer in mine including a few Type-R owners and EG with B18C, most came out very surprised :p They all thought 1.8L or 2.0L, sorry gents, 1.6L only ;) But whatever :p

Also with cars of that age, you can get good ones and you can get poorly-maintained ones. I've driven 4 year old cars with very very low torque, eventhough they are the exact same model and year as mine, which had much more pull.

HERES ONE OF THE REPLY FROM THE MEMBERS Only gearbox issues are user error. The clutch on about half was out of adjustment from the factory. Easy to see if it has been fixed/didn't have the problem is to try and change gears above 7000rpm; if you need to be he-man to do it, then it needs the adjustment. Cheap and quick to fix.
Nothing extra on the engine to look out for than any other engine.
Service is every 10,000km
98 octane only
How long is a piece of string?
Yes, there is a kick at 6000rpm.
No lift bolt issues on Sportivos, the problem was fixed for the 2003 enigne revision.
Yes, on a 1-2, and 2-3 shift it will drop below 6000rpm, but in the grand scheme of things isn't that big a drama. You can do some fancy shifting to keep it on cam, but that just damages the gearbox.
No Sportivo in 2006. No other changes other than cosmetics, everything else is the same between facelift and prefacelift.
