Hey peepz just wondering if anyone uses penzoil? And if so how does it go , what oil do you other d series fans use on your motors?
Any good brand oil is fine.I prefer a semi or full synthethic ol in my d.Every 2-3 oil changes I try something different :)
i use Mobile 1 fully synthetic every 5,000km
change oil filter every 10,000km.
if you want to go the cheaper option, semi synthetic is also fine.
You NEED to state which Mobil1 you are using. Is it the silver 5w-50 or the gold 5w/10w-30?
What is the viscosity of the penzoil you are looking at? Ideally, you want one of the viscosities below, going thicker as your car gets older.
0w-30
5w-30
10w-30
0w-40
5w-40
10w-40
for D series I use something cheap =p kidding... OEM oil is pretty good, I recommend OEM any day unless if your car is like a track monster then OEM won't cut it... different scenario though..
OEM is good because it is the correct viscosity. Just change it often and you'll rarely go wrong.
exactly why bother going to the shop and looking for the correct one when Honda has done it for you... it's not even expensive.
OEM is great but I like trying different flavours :)
there is no other flavors :p
using fuchs 10w-30. nice and cheap fully synthetic around 30ish a bottle.
Mobil 1 silver here for my D series. Pretty slack changing at about every 6-8k :( I've really gotta be less lazy...
Thanks fellaz, very helpful , i was looking @ penzoil 10w 40 , the original owner used mobil1 seemd alright if it works for ya'll then good enuff for me :)
haha,yeah exactly :)
Thanks aaron I was thinking that to change the oil after not before.I haven't changed the oil yet but cool, like you said if it's pretty new, don't change till after.Being hotter,in summer would you be looking for a slightly thicker oil?
Cheers aaron.Sorry I just understood what ya meant by how many km's...der...97,000km now :)
Yeah I was lucky,1 50 yr old lady owner and husband. It had 56k on it when I bought it 3 and a bit yrs ago :)
What auto transmission fluid would you recommend aaron for the same circumstances?
Thanks aaron.
i use castrol 10w-30 on my D16... she goes alright..
Mobil 1 pretty good oil, if you are willing to pay the $70/5L you'll be v happy with it.
Bought it on sale for $60 at Supercheap and used it on my ED9 B16A for exactly 10,000km. Even when at the end of the interval the oil has only deterioated a bit. I normally change the oil every 5,000km.
I replaced the mobil 1 with Nulon 10w40, despite the 40 rating at the warm end, it actually feels thicker at normal operating temp and the eng feels more lethragic than with the Mobil 1 5w/50 before it. So for those who thinks 50 is too thick, not in this case ( on top of the fact that the sae rating has a range where diff viscoities in cst fall into ).
good tip, thanks...im about due for an oil change now!
I'm not a fan of Nulon. :)
you could go the above mentioned:
i used penrite Sin0 fully synthetic oil..
freakin 75 bucks a bottle!!
Decent shit tho!
Use Honda Oil, bang for buck its the best imo
If you want bang for your buck and in 10w-30, buy a bottle of Calibre 10w-30from supercheap auto, comes in 5.5L and often on specials for $22-23, normally around $26 or so. It's made by Caltex Aust.
I used to buy valvoline 10w30 for non high performance jap cars, but the Cailbre is now about $5 cheaper and 0.5L more.
The Honda FEO varies in price, depending how much the honda dealer parts guys is willing to cut you a deal ie anywhere from $28-40. And it's not bottled and imported into this country, instead it's supplied by a petroleum company ( someone in this forum mentioned it's from caltex ) and packaged in a Honda FEO labelled container in the very easily achieved 10w-30 oil grade.
yeah im not too sure about this penrite oil.
there's a few occasions when i rev out and i see a cloud of smoke behind me..
any ideas??
prob too thin for your car, the sin0 is 0w40 or 0w50 right?
just try 10w30 at your next oil change, if smoke persists you can try 10w40 after that.
lol sounds like that's it!
might try the 0w-50w oil...
when in doubt mate go the factory recommended oil, Honda oil and filter ftw, may seem dear compared to other brands but is worth it in protecting your engine. You think that Honda's Engineer's didn't do proper testing to ensure a balanced product, I've taken the pepsi challenge in the past with oils and it's your car, it's worth using proper lubricants.
I got same engine. I got OEM oil now but if u want something different i used Valvoline Gold Egine armor 15/40, pretty good for the price though $25 for 6L last time i got it.
my car ek1 is about to hit 120000km soon... what type of oil do you reccommend. like thickness and stuff
i use to use catrol gtx3 in my prelude but the k's on that beast were kinda high so i dunno
Ben recommended Motul 8100 5W-40 and it feels really nice and smooth.Full synthetic,$59 for 5L from Repco.I'm Lovin' it!
My car has 97,000km
do you guyz think castrol magnetic is alright for my engine with 120000km on it?
Magnatec will be fine. Just change it every 7000km maximum.
ive got about 180thousand on my d15, and its blowing a bit of smoke under acceleration.
id say the rings are fucked, what do you recomend though something a bit thicker? like a 10w40?
On paper yes...but practically no...
0W50 has to be made up with huge amount of VII....which will shear in no time....I am guessing after 1000km to 2000km. It will become 0W40, which will be thinner than 10W40...
and you would wonder why no big oil manufacturer makes 0W50.....
i use ELF 10w50 as recommended by Hannys
i use agip sint 2000.
Epic thread, this is really helping everyone out.
Mobil 8100 5W-40 ftw! :)
My D got 201000KM, can i use 5W-40 ??? i'v told 5W-40 is really good for honda vtec engine, but now i am using 15W40 ~
wat u guyz think of castrol gtx3 15w40... the website says its made for cars from 1995
Sorry to bump an old thread. My car is due for another oil change. I drove 4500km in 6 months on Castrol Magnatec 10w-40. Should I go the same or opt for Honda OEM stuff? Do you just purchase that stuff from any Honda dealership?
Car is a 94 EG Civic Gli hatch with 81,xxx kms atm on the D15. Is there much difference between the D15 and D16.
Cheers
Both are pretty similar and at a similar price. If you don't have problems with magnatec now, you can keep using it.
penrite, hpr 10
hey guys , im using penzoil ..mineral 20w-50 for my d16a8 , which has done 200km+
is that any good ? as i wanted run sumthing thick as my engines been htrough alot i guess .. or should i go synthetic ?
cheers
