    LSD tranny?

    Hi,

Is there any way to tell if your car has an LSD tranny? Thers a sticker inside the car, where my door closes, and its got alot of jap writing (since its an import) and its got stuff in brackest like (LSD) and (4WD). now i kno its not a 4wd since its a 1991 civic vti (EG4). i kno i could always do a small burn out to find out but first iwanna kno if i can find out without having to resort to it lol.

    thanx

the best and accurate way to tell is remove the gearbox and look inside where the driveshafts & input shaft goes into, and if you can see through it witout anything blocking, or a "pin" then you have LSD, but if you see a "PIN" in the middle then its not LSD.

can't you jack the car and spin one of the driving wheels and if the other one spins in the same direction means it's LSD? heard this somewhere but can't test cos my car doesn't have it
    Why hello there

    Correct!

No need to remove gear box. Best way is to remove driveshafts and look inside.

Also (not completly sure about your model) you will have LSD in black letters stamped on your gearbox that you can view with the hood open.

Incorrect. Test does not work, in gear or not. Period.

This test works on RWD cars but not on our FWD cars.

A RWD differential works no differently to a FWD version. If it works for RWD it works for FWD. RWD's might be more commonly equiped with LSD type X which the test works for, but this is not to say that the same type of differential cannot be equiped to a FWD gearbox.

Maybe the test only works on some types of LSD. What types do people in this thread run and does the test work or not for you, maybe we can come up with a list.

another way of identifying if your gearbox has LSD is if it has the marking as:

    YS1 / Y1 w/LSD / Y80 & S80 w/LSD = LSD

The spining whell test will only work with a clutch type LSD or a spool (locked diff)

It WONT work with Helical (what hondas are) and Viscous ones.

S13 and S14 had Viscous ones and are RWD so that test wouldnt have workes. And S15;s have Helical so agaion that test wouldnt have worked

FWD design is different to RWD design.

As I understand they oppererate differently to each other.

The spinning the wheel test works on RWD, but not on FWD lsd's.

While I have no experience in this. I did make some phone calls to Differential Workshops when I had issues with my LSD and thats what they told me.
