DIY: DC2/4 Rear Wiper Delete

I decided to do this because it hardly rains anymore. And if it does, it doesn't rain for long, my wiper blade arm was getting old and i really got sick of the way it looks on the back of my car.

Not too clear, but yeh u get the point!

So what tools did I required?? <-- p.s. bad english intentional.

I opened up my 21st birthday toolkit which i have hardly used, and took
1 x 10mm socket
1 x 12mm socket
1 x Flathead screw driver
1 x Phillips Screw Driver (not too small, not too large)
1 x Adjustable wrench.

NOW, forgive me, cuz I am not a mechanical kinda person ~ BUT, by adjustable, i mean that you can make the thing actually change in size.

First thing is first! The Bloody wiper arm! (p.s. i've used pics from all over the place)

1) As you can see from this picture, with your flathead screw driver, there is a metal kind of cap that you can lift up, and it will reveal a nut underneath.

If you use your 12mm socket, it will fit nicely onto that nut, so attach and turn in an anti-clockwise manner, your socket wrench.

2) After you have undone it, if you wriggle him a little (depending on how long he has been on there) - you can just lift him off, exposing a metal rod. Which looks something like this

3) So, with your adjustable wrench, undo that little metal nut and take it off the metal rod that is poking up through the bootlid glass window.

4) Your next thing is to get your bootlid open, and pull on the plastic lining and get into the "underbelly" and the "bare metal" of your bootlid! Only unclip the stuff near your head, because the plastic is flexible enough to remain hooked up near the glass. And with your phillips head screw driver, pop it off. That will leave you with a rear wiper motor that looks like this


OK SO ~~!!!! YOU'RE ALMOST THERE, OMG ITS SO SIMPLE!!!!

5) The next thing is to undo the three bolts that are holding your motor to your chassis, and disconnecting the green and black wiring that comes from your cars wiring loom. This is where you will need your 10mm socket and you'll also need your phillips head. The one on the right needs a good screwing. The other ones prefer being socketed slowly.

Here is a blown up picture of your entire wiper assembly.

Now - imagine that there is a piece of glass (your rear windshield) in between number 7 and 6. That is filled by a rubber kinda open grommet. Can you see him??? Yes, he is there!

What you want to do, now you've unscrewed and removed your wiper assembly, you need to get rid of that dude right there. So with your flathead screwdriver, cover him with a bit of a rag so you arent rubbing metal against glass, and you try and PUSH him into the middle, so its no longer a donut. Once you push him out of place, push him down and pop him out!

You will THEN be left with a bit of a hole to cover.

NOW, I was shitting myself, cuz I dunno ANYTHING about grommets or hardware, so, I went to the bunnings near my house (literally, you can see it down the hill from where I live) - and I asked the chick there where do I go for a grommet.

Now, I dunno about you, but I dont know where grommets come from, but they suggested I go to the trade desk. And it was in Aisle 16. Now, I dunno where Aisle 16 fits into the big scheme of things, but it was completely wrong! So, I asked some old dude with grey hair where to get the grommet from. He led me straight there and asked me how big it was.. I promptly told him, I am 12 inches. And he laughed, and he said, no I meant the grommet.

OH, only little, about 1inch or so. He got a phonecall and walked off irreverently, so I just picked this one, and it turned out alright!!!

ANYWAY!!!



7) BUY THIS,

AND PUT HIM IN THE HOLE, AND PUT THE PLASTIC COVER BACK ON!

DO IT BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO DELETE THE WIPER. I DID IT LIKE THIS
a) REMOVE WIPER AND ARM
b) DRIVE WITH HOLE IN GLASS DOWN BURWOOD HIGHWAY TO BUNNINGS (altho I can see the place, i have to do a 3km trip to do it) AND IT WHISTLES WHEN UR DOING 80km/h!
c) BUNNINGS STAFF FUN
d) PUT IT IN THE HOLE!!!
e) PLASTIC COVER!

the only problem with this is that that old wiper arm is part of the support which holds the plastic cover to the windscreen. Now there will only be one bolt supporting it on the window.

I'm going to try and find something like a grommet with a bolt stuck in the rear, prob with a wingnut.
