I have used 91 RON exclusively on my Civic and to my knowledge no one can get close to my average fuel consumption, but i dont drive in the city.
This is a question I have discussed ad nauseum with my cousin who is a motor mechanic, as I was always of the same opinion as you.
It is his belief that the few cents per litre more for 95 or 98 RON is justified by the better quality fuel. For some cars that will result in better fuel economy and performance, but it is the effect on the engine that he uses to justify his opinion. Many engines that he sees that use 95 or 98 are cleaner than those only using 91 RON.
He thinks the majority of 91 RON petrols have too many impurities and not enough additives whereas the better quality of 95 RON for just 5 cents more a litre is the minimum he would use.
He knows far more about cars than me!
On the other hand though, my old man only ever gets the cheapest fuels at discount petrol stations. He drives a Mazda 3 SP23 and has never had any problems with it, and gets more kms out of a tank than that quoted by Mazda!!!

i can get close to 650km on my 45L tank. (mix of city and freeway driving)
-
Auto 07 Vti (only second tank through the car though)
I got 420km for 40L..
- 30% freeway and reletivley open roads though with aircon on a some of the time.
- 70% peak hour in the city, gridlock more stop than start

540km on 45L full tank. Could of squeezed more ks but didn't have the balls to do a Kramer.
90% city driving
10% highway

did 500km today and only used 39 litres of my 45 litre tank.
first 400km of non-vtec. last 100km of using vtec, =)
but, my low fuel light doesn't work, so i filled up. damn it, could've got another 80kms or so out if it. hehe

I can see the calculators coming out and heads shaking in dis belief.
If you want to keep your engine clean, change your oil and filter every 5,000km. I am probably the only silly bugger who does that.......LOL

What a bad mispost that was, i will try again

Being a mechanic of 32 years experience i understand that view, however fuel contamination has always been a problem. Be it 91, 95 0r 98 octane does not eliminate that possibility, however i believe the quality of fuel today is far better than in years past, providing we buy fuel form the larger suppliers. As for fuel additives, each company has there own belief on which additives work best and they all differ. Which is best in the real world.....whatever works for you. I have used nothing but standard 91 octane since i brought my Civic and the ecconomy still amazes me.......31,339kms......2,167.43 liters

6.916 to be exact which i find very impressive, and would you believe the overall average is decreasing fractionally every week. In the last 11,500kms i have only once gone over the 7L/100km, and that was after a few days in sydney.
This is a country car that is not driven hard, nor is it treated like a baby. Usually whatever is the posted speed limit + 5 to 10%.
If you want unbelievable my last 5 weeks have resulted in 6.71, 6.53, 6.34, 6.43, 6.50. That is very consistant and the differences could easily be put down to the level of weekly refils. Before anyone says that is impossible everything is recorded in a log book i will happily share.

yes even i record all my trips on excel thanks to SG2, i have been going down as well, i am averaging 7.70/100 but i do alot of surburban stop start driving.

Actually, the above figures dont explain how incredible the fuel consumption now is. I say that because there has been a marked improvement since the 20,000km mark, so if we use that as a starting point i am sure most of you would shke your heads in disbelief. From 20,145km till present (31994) i have used 747.49 Liters to travel 11,849km.........would you believe that equates to 6.308L/100km.........unbelievable.........that is almost 1L/100km better than advertised by honda and people say advertised fuel consumption is unrealistic and cant be achieved in real world driving. I have put that theory to sleep permanently.
