Looking at buying an EG, quick couple of Q's
Hi all,
First off, I'm new to these forums, so be easy on me :P
I'm currently thinking of buying a used 94 EG Civic, and have a couple of quick Q's about them in general...
First off, the clutch on the car, was extremely light, and every time i depressed the pedal, there may have been a slight rattle/metal on metal grinding noise (unable to confirm 100% if this was every time, as it had an annoyingly loud exhaust system, which I'll prolly take off...) What is the most likely cause of such a noise? Are these cars prone to having clutch issues? How hard is it to change the clutches in these cars? (Keep in mind i have very little mechanical knowledge when it comes to 1:1 scale cars - I'm into my remote control cars...)
The sunroof on the car wouldnt open by its self, i had to push it up first, is this normal? (never had a sunroof in a car...) would close by itself fine though...
Are Civics a reliable car? I currently drive approx 20kms to work and another 20k back every day, and dont have another reliable way of getting to work, So it is very important the car be reliable...further on that note, what are the common faults on these cars?

sun roof = no
civics ARE very reliable but it really also depends on the owner
i suggest u check the normals PLUS check to make sure the front and rear safety bar are still there!
GEt UNDER THE CAR to check!
open the hatch, and check where it opens and surounding area for damage(common problem from whether rain and such)

Civics are very reliable when looked after.. and even when not!
Sounds like an aftermarket sunroof?
You can't just push open or close a stock EG5 sunroof by hand alone, you need to twist a screwdriver into a crank slot on the roof directly above the middle of the windscreen. That’s if the powers out or not connected...
Clutch - just rev to 4000RPMs and drop the clutch, see if there’s any slipping.
That noise might be worn brake pads on rotors, check em out and see if there’s metal on metal..
Stock Civic clutches are light anyway but aren’t to costly to fix..

Hi,
First off, thanks for the replys.
As far as im aware, the sunroof is original, but the glass and seal has just been replaced. The electrics were activly trying to open the roof when i basically gave it a little nudge, but it wouldnt open by its self..
I'll see if i can take it for another test drive, and check out the clutch, and try do that with the clutch.
The noise only seemed to happen when I depress the clutch, not whilst braking, I thought this could indicate possible bearings issue relating to the clutch? - Really have NFI what im talking about, but as its not making the sound whilst braking, I thought that would have ruled out brakes?
I'm assuming that you mean where do I live? If so, I'm up in Darwin - And theres basically bugger all in Darwin thats decent.
Also, the car had a short throw shifter on it, is it easy to take these off, and go back to stock? It feels very strange, to me, which I don't like.

Sounds like you don't have to many options but still i think you should have a mech check her out for you mate..
Safest and best way if you don't know what your looking for IMO

A better/nicer way is to gun it in 5th

Sounds to me like this guys trying to rip poor Manusdei off
Knows he wants a Civic and with few options available to him in Darwin hes trying one on....
Hence he should get a qualified mechanic to check it over!
If its loud enough to hear over the fully sick exhaust system its a worry for sure IMO

My sunroof had a bit of an issue getting up as well, like u mentioned the motor is running but it needed a little nudge to get it up. i just gave it a bit of WD40 and its all smooth now

Sorry, if i wanted some thing like a toyota, I would go down to the dump, get and old fridge, and put some wheel on it. I want some thing sportyish, or at least looks sporty...
Considering southern options, but theyll cost just as much as this one up here once i add transport on top. which imo, is too much to pay for a 96 model vehicle.

I told the guy im not instrested, specially at the price hes asking (6.5k), main rason being, that is only got about 2 months rego left, and will have to be inspected to be able to extend the rego, which with a pod filter, isnt going to pass.

You may want to consider buying from another state and getting it transported over. I have done this before and while the transport cost me $600-$800 from Melbourne to Perth I had a much larger range of cars to choose from and they were cheaper to boot. Just make sure you trust the seller 100% before sending any money. It is hard but you can arrange to get the vehicle mechanically inspected and if the buyer is dinkum he will allow it. The company will then fax or email the report to you and you can make a decision. Like I said, be 100% sure the seller isn't going to rip you off and you will be fine. If you want any help let me know.

What honda EG is this? GL or VTi?? push up sunroof sounds bit old skool for an EG lol..
