can you please create a list of the oils and which category (group 3,4 or 5) for us noobs so we can relate to when purchasing?
As much as I want to, the oil companies rarely display the type of base stock they are using and it's usually a mix.
But as a general rule, unless specified on the bottle, the cheaper synthetics Shell Helix Ultra/Castrol Titanium etc are group 3, even then there's rare exceptions depend on oil weight, for example, 0w40 synthetic oils normally require a good portion of group 4 or 5 in the mix to reach that grade.
So it's really complex sadly. But whenever a brand actually displays their base stock as group 4 &5 (Redline/Amsoil/Mutol/Penrite), we jump on it if its a good price.
Is "Racing" oil alright for everyday run around cars (like our Euros)?
I would say so. "Racing" stuff are usually made to much lower tolerances, and is designed to deal with much higher stress and temps. Rated for higher mileage as well.
