I'm 28, full comp insurance with justcar, plus I added more to my excess, that way it drops the premium. I could have payed like $1037, but I didn't want my excess to be $1700

Looking for some rims atm. Found some evo 8 enkei 17x8 +38 with 235/45/17 tyres. From reading on a few forums people say you can run them on stock suspension if the tyres are 215/45/17.

What do I need to do to make the 235/45/17 tyres fit? I really prefer not to roll my guards. Do I only need to get a camber kit?

If I get coilovers (lower the car) will i definitely need to roll my guards?

PepX you should get away with it on stock sussy. Tyres are only 20mm wider as a whole and rims will stick about 15mm ish . If lowered u may need a little camber but stll think u may get away with it. Why not use the 215's you have?

Btw....your speed will also increase as those Tyres are bigger.

On stock sussy, you will scrub the rear going over speedhumps and hard cornering, and it will obviously be worse if you have passengers in the back. Its easier to just roll the rear guards.

And if you're going to lower the car then you will definitely need to roll the guards.

I'm currently running a 16x8 +38, 205/50/16... which sat pretty flush with the guards at stock height. Fronts stick out slightly more than the rear. No scrubbing, at stock height. Put in my coilovers recently, still no scrubbing. Not over low though, if I am to go lower... I will need to roll the rears, to keep camber at a respectable level.

With a 235, I'm pretty sure it will scrub on the rear lip, if not rolled. Also inner clearence to the rear swing arm might be an issue. I looked at mine recently and there's no much clearence there.

I didn't end up getting the rims because I want some ultralight regamaster like perry :).

I just want to confirm coilovers such as Tein SS and Buddy Club N+ have camber plates which can adjust camber slightly?

What is the max negative camber good for daily driving and not have noticeable wear on the inner part of the tyre?

Its probably around half the size of A4 page (A5 size). But I wouldn't have been able to fit the pod without cutting that big because the back section (bottom of the filter, plastic part) is sticking into the wheel arch by like 1cm.

I've attached a sheet of plastic to cover the hole.

Do any of you guys know if dedy at top one puts in full synthetic oil when servicing? I think he put in some valvoline 15w30.

Checked my oil today and it was down to half way so i thought i should probably top it up.

What oil should i use to top it up?

How many kilometres has it done and how often do you vtec it? It also seems like your burning quite a lot of oil, so for maybe next service go for a slightly higher grade. I normally use full syn 5w30 and my car barely burns any oil. Check what type of oil it is before you top it up, like if its full, semi or mineral base oil.

Ok, so maybe I don't have cams :P, perhaps a REALLY healthy engine? will see when the Kpro goes in. Just felt there must be something different because when dragging other EP3's/DC5's I'm usually quite a lot faster with similar or (supposedly) less mods.

All EP3's are JDM K20A here. Honda did a good job on engineering the airbox's resonance chambers to silence the intake sound. you can try a Hondata airbox mod to see if that makes it a bit louder (involves cutting the main partition of the airbox to make one large chamber instead of two). Otherwise, going with a Injen will be guaranteed loud cross over.

Interesting Lukezen, coz my car made 144.9KW on a hub dyno with I/H/E, and was faster than a kpro tuned dc5 (jdm engine) with basically the same I/H/E parts.

I'm wondering if my car has some mild cams done by the previous owner in Japan.

Hey PeppeX did you find the answer to this? I'm also wondering...

If you are going to top up, you must top it up with the EXACT same oil. You can't mix oil brand or oil with different viscosity. Reason for that is because different oil have different additives and the effects of mixing them is unknown.

How many kms have you travelled since your last service with dedy?

3000km. But heard VTEC does eat alot of oil. Maybe i should take my own oil next time or do you think valvoline at dedy is good enough? Maybe buy some off dedy to top off the oil inbetween services?

BTW i just installed my Fujita intake on sat night. I can definately hear when the VTEC crossover on the stock box.... The crossover with CAI sounds like a dump of air getting sucked into the engine, its like a 1 loud subwoofer DOOF! :)

Theres really no point to go to a higher grade unless your car is burning a lot of oil or if its leaking. You do get better protection but however it will make your engine work harder in the thicker oil. If you do plan to use thicker oil, never go over 10w40. In the castrol recommendation book, i say about 90% of toyotas and hondas ever use 10w40 and the highest viscosity they can will ever go is 15w40. So just stick with the viscosity that your car is use to and 100 000kms is really not that bad.

Weird. Drain and refill is just 2 bottles for me. Done it many times. Each bottle of MTF is 1L. Ep3 Service manual states 1.8L for a drain and refill.

I get my MTF for $15-16 per bottle. If dealer says otherwise just ask them price match it.

Labour only cost $30 from most mechanics.

Next time when you go into a dealer. Don't bother mentioning you have an import. They just give you a hard time, so you can get off their property.

drive belt is different between DC5 and EP3.

I believe this is true because the DC5R runs hydraulic power steering pump and hence the belt should be longer than that of a ep3.

The ep3 just runs a small tensioner pulley in place of the missing hydraulic pump.

I'm at a bit of a loss and cannot figure out why the left side is higher than the right... The left side I maxed out today, and it has a 1.5-2 finger gap between the guard and tyre. The right side still has about 25mm of thread to wind down, however this side has less than 1 finger gap. Coilovers: BC BR's base height adjustable.

Apart from adjusting the coilover height, am I missing something??? I checked, it doesn't look like anything is bent, not signs of rear end damage under the car...

Okay cool, i'll check them on the car. If that doesn't yield any result, then I'll flip them. Yeah the BC BR site says, their preload is set 5mm up from when the spring seat touches the spring.

also what do you guys think of 17x8 +35 all round on stock height? no intentions of coils or anything lower than stock springs/sussy cause im scratching my exhaust over some speedhumps....

My aftermarket actuator didnt go in the same place as the oem ones. The guy had to drill holes into the door to put the new motors up.

This is what 17x7 +25 looks like lowered on BuddyClub N+ coilovers with negative camber dialled in. So 17x8 will look pretty much the same from the outside. There is no rubbing and scrubbing (though my rear guard has been rolled). Your RM01A must hang lower than the stock exhaust by quite a bit..

Closest pic I have of a 17x8 set up, +37... but this one is again lowered, no tyre specs unfortunately. Sits pretty nice though...

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt212/KAIZENRPS_13/17x837advanrsrz-1.jpg?t=1304550601

My wheels before I lowered it, 16x8 +38, 205/55/16... not rolled yet in the pic. No rubbing, even though the tyre is slightly taller.

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt212/KAIZENRPS_13/IMG_6577.jpg?t=1304550568

The 17x8 +35 will sit 3mm further out... You should get away with a 215/45/17... try use your old tyres first, if your using a 215/45, should it rub then maybe drop to a 205/45, or roll your guards.

Hey guys brought an EP3 about 2 weeks ago. Just waiting for it to be shipped over.
Look forward to going on some meets in the future.

Haven't driven one before but coming from a few Evo's and GTR's it should be interesting.

Interesting to read about people using different oils. Any advice on what oil to be using in winter. In the past I have used 300V 10/40 in both winter and summer.
Also what plugs are you guys using?

Welcome! nice choice of car... good to see another EP member in melbourne too!

Currently using Castrol Edge 5w-30, previously used it all year round for about 3yrs on the 180sx...
Plugs I'm using atm: NGK Iridiums ZFR6FIX-11
You can also use the NGK Iridium IFR7G-11K, also saw someone using the BKR6EIX-11, you could also use the BKR7EIX-11

Anyone tried using NGK coppers. I tend to prefer coppers as you cant get a better spark from anything else.

I always thought iridiums can conduct the same as the copper plugs. Its just that the platinum plugs can not conduct the same as copper but they can last for quite a long time. Iridiums also have a similar life span to the platinum ones and should give out a spark similar to the copper ones.

EP3TYPER

From what I know copper has the best spark of all plugs.
Platinum and Iridium's have a longer life but do not create as much spark they are also more likely to foul. (Do not quote me)

Quite common. I've seen a few ep with cracked paint or loss of paint.

mine's started to crack :(

I may buy a brand new one when I do my valve clearance. They're about $300ish for a new one.

When you have time, get the old one sprayed and sell it. Or maybe just sell as is to recoup money. That's my plan.

Recycled compressed air from my backside seems to work well. The density of it contributes to stiffer side walls and helps a stock ep3 achieve sub 1.10 on wakefield.

Is there that much variance in the type of compressor used to pump your tyres? Can someone explain the idea behind it, as it's a bit odd to think that where you inflate your tyres would have any significant impact on on-road performance (esp power figures on a dyno).

Poeter
09-05-2011, 09:43 AM
LOL. I was thinking the same too.

Whatever they are pumping, it's still the same gas that we breathe from the air I believe.

Nepolian
09-05-2011, 09:52 AM
No no no munki and the poiter....you have it way wrong. The air produced for special compressors, as mention give out much denser air (similar to the air super steve and I breath). Now without getting too tethnical, this special air will load the side walls of your tyres more hence more grip and will also keep air temps down.

I hope chubby steve will chime in as he was the master of this art. There was a rumor me cheated when obtaining a fast WSID run by tapping this air into the cai giving the car secret super powaaaa!

munkaii
09-05-2011, 10:21 AM
Would like the hear the technical side of it, I'm just trying to get my head around it :). Just using what I learnt from uni..

If we assume that air is an ideal gas, and that you are trying to pump more dense air into the tyre.

P = density * R * T

Then more dense air implies that at a given pressure, you will keep temps down as you mentioned above.

By loading the sidewalls, do they flex more or less? (Don't know much about tyre deformation) I would think they flex less so that they can put power down better? Would you run any different tyre pressures given the more dense air?

Edit: Cooler Tyre Temp = Less elasticity in the side wall = Less Flex?

Or am I WAYYY OFF. Let me know! Would love to learn.

Poeter
09-05-2011, 10:45 AM
Hmm I would had thought flexing of the sidewall will affect cornering more than just putting power on the ground.

munkaii
09-05-2011, 10:48 AM
Maybe on launch when all the weight transfer goes towards the back, so the aim is to maintain a solid rear end to keep the front end down, hence allowing for greater front wheel grip. One way is obviously to have a firm suspension in the rear, so I assume having sidewalls that don't flex prevents the rear wheels from deforming too much, thus keeping front end down.

I'm sure there's a term for this but I don't know what it is lol.

Edit: This is all a stab in the dark until someone confirms hahaha. Just trying to reason. But yes, on circuit I would think sidewall flex would have a significantly greater influence.
