thats some nice bits out there, has your mate bought stuff off that auction site?

yeah a couple of times( he has only ever bought skyline parts) , he got some guy from the local uni to do all the buying as his computer was setup for the language and could understand it

depending on how low the drop is from the springs, this will shorten the life of your OEM shocks. Since they are compressed all the time.

well im probably not looking to lower it much at all just to close the gap.

would anyone know any shocks that are similar to the stock ones? or perform abit better but still have the comfort?

hey phil,

i purchased a stock ecu from the states with a kpro on it so its just a direct swap. It is the acura rsx ecu aswell. Was told by my tuner that it will work.

Philip Lee

thanks Steve. however i wonder how stock the immobilisor would work....

the reason i'm looking at K100 or Kpro is that i have difficulty finding someone to code my key. if i have to spend $400 to get a key from Honda, i might as well spend a little more and get ECU and disable the damn immobilisor and spend $30 for a normal key.

also where did you find used ECU? honda tech? so you took the kpro off the RSX ecu and put it into your EP3 ones?

btw how is your inverted tie rod ends? still good and no play?

thanks

i run 18s and love them. tyres are a little more ex but i dun care lol

id go Advan RS or RZ. get 8" wide and + 37 offset. i think the RZ is GTR style (aggressive concave spoke design) too.

is +37 the max offset with having to roll or anything? can u run 8.5 with +37?

Philip Lee
06-04-2010, 04:20 PM
i'd say so. running 8.5 wide will need 225 tyres.

8 wide is the max width for 215. if u run 17 x 8 then u can use 215/45/17 and your speedo won't be out that much.

tang(oO)
06-04-2010, 04:22 PM
isn't the speed only affected by the diameter of the wheel? not the width? correct me if im wrong

Philip Lee
06-04-2010, 04:29 PM
yeah but if u stick with the same profile then the diameter will increase = speedo out.

to go 225, u'll probably need to get odd size tyres like 225/40/17 = cost more $$

i'm so tempted to get RZ in 17 x 8 +37 as i have a set of 215/45/17. but i should do Kpro first lol.

I have a vision one. Lower by 5cm and it feels great. I now see out from the middle of the windscreen.

My fd has a unknown brand (came with car) and it's another 3 cm lower. Feels even better to drive but needs to be careful for parking.

i finally received my car last nite. the vtec on the k20 engine is insane!!!! pulling from 2nd gear i was able to get to almost 100km/hr before the fuel was cutting out at the rpm limit - made this really cool revving sound :) so happy with it so far!

tunacnt - definitely recommended. tips from my experience:

low kms are not that unusual as ppl in Japan don't drive their cars very often (as they got huge taxes / tolls to pay) but definitely check the logbooks. I got a 2004 ep3 just imported from japan with 23000km's and they all legit. Best way to check the wear of the car is by looking at the insides of the recaros and the steering wheel. In my one they were in A1 condition but of course there's other things you can check too (dont ask me though :S)

a note about CW - there's a fair few in australia especially the pre-FL (01-03) black and red are rarer. On the upside CW tend to go cheaper than others because of this.

Question for FL owners - do you find that when you press the lever only the seats fold forward but do not move forward?? (When passengers come in and out) To get enough room I need to manually move the seat forward on the front lever and then fold the seat forward. (ps this does not apply to the pre-FL)

Philip Lee
16-04-2010, 10:10 AM
Mine seat is the same and I thought FL and pre FL have same recaro rails.

Btw Honda only made FL EP3 in CW and silver (only on c package). They didn't make any red and black FL.

Yeah I received a 01 owners manual from Shogun and on that one theres a button you can push at the bottom right hand corner of the back seat that you use to push the seat forward so rear passengers can get in and out. I looked around for 20mins and couldnt find anything. While you're online whats the C-package mean? Is that just exterior upgrades like back windscreen wiper?

Philip Lee
16-04-2010, 11:41 AM
I seriously doubt our seat is diff to pre FL other than trim colour.

C stands for comfort and include additional features such as rear wiper, rear privacy glass, folder mirrors.

The majority EP3s are c package.

I'll scan the page I got for you next week. It was just in the illustration/diagram it clearly showed a button on the bottom corner of the seat that is used to bring the seat forward. Anyways its all good at least I know this occurs with another FL EP3 - I'll just make sure no one on roids steps foot inside my car :)

Thanks for the info abt the meaning of C-package I was too lazy to get a google search happening...

I've got a Fujita CAI on mines.

I installed it myself. I've never EVER installed a CAI nor pulled off my front bumper before, and it took me 3 hours to do it all. I had to remove the old stock airbox, and take off my bumper to install it. Also had to cut a bit off from the plastic fender for the pipe to go through.

good choice, i have the same one and u'll love it.

i DIY it, a friend to help out would be nice but not a necessity; i installed it in my garage (no hoist). well i took off the bumper but i think you might be able to do it from the splash guard with the front left wheel off.

look out for the grounding wire, i put some electrical tape on the intake pipe so they will not touch each other. also connect the vaccum hoses first before hooking up the pipe at the throttle body as it will be quite deep and hard to reach from either directions.

otherwise quite straight forward. just follow the instruction.

ladies and gents, review is in.

after finishing up last night at about 1230am, having started at 930pm, i wasnt bothered to give it a test run.

so today, i let it idle for 15 mins, then took it for a light spin to uni. note - the only other major mod currently is a fujitsubo power getter exhaust (axle back)

morning run:
immediately felt that the revs were lifting easier, and quicker, it was noticable because my usual run to the speed limit left me about 8km/h over, so i could really feel it taking off. the car has much more of a sucking sound on quick bursts.
didnt want to burn it, but gave it a quick hit on the last street towards uni - 6000, 7000 - ***** wut? no changeover sounds.

evening run:
after thinking about it all day, pretty disappointed really, i brought my car down to the carpark to meet a mate, so he could check it. took it for a spin, no changeover. at this point i still thought maybe it was cold, or low oil, or otherwise.

keep in mind that before the CAI, i had a short ram on. and while the changeover was VERY loud, it suffered from heatsoak, and i didnt like the idea of hot air in the engine. + defect chances.

so then i took off for a long drive, over the harbour bridge, and back. what i noticed - the change over sound seems to come in later than before, but is almost completely unnoticeable. in staying that, it seems to pull hard, and with more of a scream from the engine, like it is suddenly urging forward. But that is only if i push it to 7000+. before that, theres no real difference, besides being in a high rev range = louder than normal driving. so i need to push it hard, which i dont like to do while daily driving.

i took it through a tunnel, and the roar is definitely strong, but it isnt as exciting as the short ram.

so, what have i come up with. maybe it is installed wrong, leaking or otherwise. maybe my oil pressure is low. i dont know.

phil - any advice?

i might pull it apart and have a look again, because it doesnt sound right!

p3p5y
21-04-2010, 11:01 PM
You sure it's not because you're so used to your existing SRI being so loud?
I came from a stock airbox to the Fujita CAI and you can really tell when VTEC engages as it was very loud.

Perhaps you need to reset your ECU?

GEG
21-04-2010, 11:08 PM
disconnected the battery last night while working, put it back on, left the car off.

this morning turned on, let idle for 15 mins.

then drove as normal.

thats a reset, right? seriously cant really notice a sound change. yes im comparing to the short ram, but it sounds pretty similar to my mate's stock ep3...

Philip Lee
21-04-2010, 11:08 PM
I notice u r coming from a short ram. Maybe it would be louder than a CAI as it's much closer to the interior?

My CAI replaced the stock box so to me i wasn't bothered with the sound. My concern was the lost low end torque which was madeup once the cat back was installed.

Also my vtec crosses at around 6000rpm and the sound is noticable. But my car started to get loud from 5000 after I got some engine mount inserts fitted. Honestly I can't remember how it sounded b4 the mounts as it's been a long time.

So your vtec kicks in fine? No CEL?

GEG
21-04-2010, 11:14 PM
No CEL, but for me the real test was the friend that took it for a spin, since he is running a stock ep3r, and has been for a while - so he could compare.

There was no cross over sound. He let it roll just before 6000, and then gave it short bursts, with no real difference besides higher revs.

Was that the proper way to reset the ECU? Should i try again?

How now brown cow?

GEG
21-04-2010, 11:16 PM
Oh and it is still on stock mounts, running shell v power.

Comparing tunnel runs before to tonight's tunnel run, you can definitely hear the surge of acceleration, but no A to B crossover.

Philip Lee
21-04-2010, 11:16 PM
Btw no point taking it all apart. Just make sure all the clamps are tight and all the vaccum hoses are fitted fine.

As long as the engine runs normally (ie revs smoothly, no lost of power, vtec kicks in at 6000 and no CEL) then there isn't much wrong with it.

But in my car, when I just start it there is noticable sucking noise but it would get quiet after a while and u won't really hear the sucking noise until I rev the engine. However on my mates sportivo with similar design TRD CAI the noise is there all the time.

Philip Lee
21-04-2010, 11:22 PM
Re resetting the ecu, I didn't really reset it other than taking out the battery during fitting for the extra space.

Maybe go to a syd coffee meet and try to get a ride in a car with CAI and also asking ppl to ride in your car.

GEG
21-04-2010, 11:22 PM

I will top up my oil for tomorrow, and i might look in to getting some of those ducts to throw some extra air that way from the grill or around.

Return updates tomorrow!

how did you go? any update?

GEG
23-04-2010, 12:59 PM
Half update for now lol

so the car drove fine, was going to recheck the piping, and top up oil as discussed.

come morning time, i topped up the oil, let it sit, then took it out for the day.

from the very first take off, something felt funny. the clutch was slipping, and was unable to hold the acceleration through the band. the engine revs as normal, but that is not converting in to power, the car is very slowly creeping forward.

so i am not able to even overtake, because i cant generate the speed on the moment - without maxing out the revs just to get to 60..

what bothers me is that it literally happened overnight, with no changes in anything else.

last night i took it all apart, checked the vacuum hoses, and the seals around the silicon bend pipe - all good. put it back together from scratch just incase.

same thing today, no change. i am going to take it down to a mechanic to have a check at 3pm today. i refuse to believe that the clutch is on the way out, it was perfect until the night before, with no changes. the gear box is super strong, as always - so not the issue.

has it fallen out of alignment? i have no idea what happened. but it smells like clutch no matter where i go.

help!!

Philip Lee
23-04-2010, 01:34 PM
i think there is more issue than just the CAI alone........

GEG
23-04-2010, 01:40 PM
yeh seems to be, any idea what? it was 100% the night before, and then wouldnt take off in the morning? i just want to have an idea of what to ask or know about when i go to get the mechanic to take a look

GEG
23-04-2010, 01:49 PM
nothing else was taken off .. but i did lose a small sized socket into the depths, remember...

dremeled the plastic off, put on the pipe, lost a socket, topped up oil

that's the step by step of the changes!

GEG
23-04-2010, 03:39 PM

That's sad to hear! Clutch dies out of nowhere.. Really strange, you sure you didn't severly burnt te clutch the night before?

One thing I'm scared of is clutch dieing!
I heard exedy organic clutch is quite good, not very heavy and a little heavy then stock, have a look into it!

GEG
23-04-2010, 07:08 PM
definitely not burning the clutch, i guess it was just on the way out, but sucks about the cost of it all!!

exedy sports organic is the popular choice, says indy for IS motor racing

im going to get him to do it, he says that during the taking off of a bolt, there is a chance of the vibration breaking an o2 sensor, which not many mechanics know. so, i am going to go to him instead of the local guy, just incase. i dont want to risk the future problems.

Mugen_B16B
23-04-2010, 07:41 PM
excedy organice the way to go, looking at 500-600, get ur flywheel machine and ur sweet, it should rev much smoother aswell after the machine

GEG
23-04-2010, 07:43 PM
indy said he includes the machining, which the local mechanic did not mention doing. also, fluid change, and the clutch + labour, for about 1200-1300

i guess the experience costs a bit on top, but everyone quoted about 6 hours as they also need to drop the cross member i think, so similar prices all round

Yeah I wasn't complaining about the photo, I like CE28N's.

Just because they are Rays nuts doesn't mean they won't get stripped. Aluminium no matter what grade T6/cold forged whatever is 'soft' compared to proper steel nuts and strip a lot easier.

Sorry I should have been more clear. What I'm saying is it isn't a flat out "no you can't use a rattle gun" - if it's set to the lowest level of torque it should be 'ok' and your mechanic finished tightening them with a torque wrench set to the correct specs. If this procedure was followed then yeah.

If it's done too tight, the nuts might fuse onto the studs or become stripped

clicks are very personal, start from the middle and play around till you are happy.

No need to jack car to adjust, just pop the bonnet and hatch.

You shouldn't be using a harness without a HANS device or you will suffer major, life time damaging whip lash or death in the event of an accident.

That harness bar doesn't look strong enough. Yeah it will hold your harness but will it stop you from flying out of your seat.

Waste of money

alrighty! time for an update!

let me prefix this by saying i just went to watch iron man 2, and it was freakin sweet!

SO: got the car back today, after a week off the road. for those of you playing at home, here's what i had done -

Flush all the pipes
Engine oil change (fully synthetic)
Gearbox fluid change
Brake fluid change
x4 Platinum spark plugs
Flywheel machined
Exedy Sports Organic Clutch installed

straight out of the workshop, i realised the change an "OEM type" clutch can make. the friction point is quite low, much lower than the stock, which i find unusual, because i have lost my sense of timing! going to have to relearn that. and also - it is much harder to push down on! the two points combined mean for a lot of jerk while shifting. trying to keep shifts lower than 3k, which is fine really, as it's keeping me focused on the clutch work.

the exedy site reads 1000km bedding in time, so i suppose no overtaking, and it will be interesting to test how far my fuel can really go!

after a nice drive home, i decided to just put it in gear, and do a short run, without changing gears so i didnt touch the clutch, and then letting it slow itself down. nothing hard, just a slow build from 3-5, 5-6, down, and up again.

HELLO FUJITA.

i dont know where it was before, but let me tell you, it is a very very nice sound!!! rolling up the revs, i heard for the first time an urging rumble, which i never got in my short ram. with the short ram, only the cross over was noticeable, however the massive sound difference meant there was an uneven torque curve i believe.

tonight, as soon as i had it running at a nice range, it was just purring all the way through, and it sounded really really nice, matched with my fujitsubo exhaust! as it reached 5k, i could feel the cold air rushing in, which is hard to explain, but if you have run with a short ram and hot air before, you can just sense the ease with which it was rolling. the echoing was rumbling all around, from the front, and straight out the muffler. i did a bit of a changeover, and yep - it is all there and working! a tad softer than short ram, but the build up was less forced, and much more zippy!

so the changes i have noticed:

stock box:
no induction sound
crossover sounds like a whisper

short ram:
defect in the making
induction sound only just before hitting vtec zone
great crossover sound
serious heatsoak on warm days

fujita cold air intake:
stealth piping so it cant be seen
induction sound throughout the low range as well
can feel the cold air difference, i am going to get some extra feeds towards the filter to help too
great crossover sound that stays strong

so it was a big day - last week i left being a little disappointed. it seems everything has come together now, and i am thrilled. all i was thinking was - so glad i chose an ep3! loving it!

stay tuned, i am trying to organise some fun for my wheels for next week ;)

yippeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Lol @ Torque steer...yes it does. Other things I have noted on my new 02 EP3..Its rough, can hear every bit of road noise, uncomfitable, the stock speakers suck and the torque steer...

Bottom line, I aint never selling it.

This car has put me back in touch with why I like to drive. No fancy traction do wiccy or auto stabilizing road whats it. Havent felt like this since my 76 LH I had when I was an apprentice all those years ago.

Yes my wifes Huyndai soccer mum fake 4wd is nice to take away on family trips(FYI they aint allowed in or near the EP3, but that will change I guess), but the ep3 seems to be in a whole different league for me, even test driving all the fancy cars the guys at work have has left me knowing I made the right choice.

K sorry for the rant, back to reality..

Oil change what breed and type is best for the K20A ?

Have no mods yet other than the Mugen TL, tho looks like the CAI is a nice idea.

Thanks again

c1v1c - look in the diy section for a thread on how to reset your srs light system first, otherwise take it to a honda mech to check the code with their machine thing, to make sure nothing is actually not working. if the light is on, the bags wont work, so look in to it sooner than later!

my drivers window, if opened, then closed - closes to the top, pauses a moment, then comes down on its own to around the window visor level, and stops there. if i close it again, if goes up, pauses, then opens again to the same level. however - if i lock the door, the window goes up (as per my alarm) and stays closed - so i know the motor works properly. when i unlock, it remains fully closed, until i open and try to close it again.

ideas?

Quick question, putting a K24 bottom end requires a lot of work?
Reason being owning a CL9 previously, K20 head on the K24 block required basically all the K20 components but now with the EP3...
all the components are there except the bottomend...
your thoughts?

If I havent owned a black car I would of said get the black EP3 but putting nice lip and spoiler on a black car you wont be able to see the lines of the car as much as white.

It would be the same, but in reverse, hate to state the obvious lol!

Would need the block, timing chain and KPro just off the top of my head. Possibly need to mod the headers for clearance etc.....

I'm sure there's a little more than that otherwise a lot more DC5 owners would have K24 powers too.

Hi All,

Just having some trouble with my EP3 atm, hope someone can help me out. My SRS Light came on a few weeks ago, I thought nothing much of it and decided to disconnect the battery to see if that would reset everything, which it didnt. Has anyone else had this problem before? If so how was it fixed? Or if no one has had this before, does anybody know how to fix it?

Cheers all and safe driving.

Yeh mine has done the same and i got my next door neighbor (mechanic) to run a diagnostic on it and apparently it is a faulty clock spring in the steering collum, i haven't fixed mine yet but will post when i do, clock springs are about $30 off ebay uk or you can just fit a ep3 vti one in aus.

Hello EP3 Owners,

I'm flirting with the idea of selling my current car and buying an EP3 Civic Type R. Would like an 05 update model in Championship White. :)

Can anyone give me some indication of pricing according to kms and year model? Also does anyone have first hand experience about dealing with an import broker (eg. J-Spec, Prestige Motorsport, SVi, etc).

Thanks,
