currently have innovative engine mounts. heaps of vibration when car is idle

UNA91

Most of my rattle came from my a pillars vibrating against the center console which some felt tape dampened it up good. I also have hasports 60a mounts with 70a in the rear and vibrations were not as bad as i thought. i also raised the idle slightly with kpro which got rid of a heap of NVH in the car.

I guess it depends what you intend to gain
You won't gain better grip, especially not around corners.
If its for looks, by all means.

Not for looks at all, just found a pair of really good tyres for a really good price that happen to be those size.
I mean I'm running chinese brand cheap tyres that lose traction around round abouts, so I was just hoping these would suffice until I get coin for a proper set of tires and wheels.

I have a set of brand new Toyo R1R 215/45/17 (done about 50km on them). would you be interested? bought on impulse and i drive like a granny, not using them to their potential

or i have 4x toyo DRB 205/45/17 tyres about 70% tread, decent tyres

At 225/45 (I assume you're running this profile and not a 40 profile) it would already bulge/balloon a little so imagine it with a 245/40 tyre. It'd look pretty stupid and the handling of your car would also deteriorate.

I ran 245/40 tyres on my 9" wheels and they sat flush. The stock wheel is 7" wide (or 7.5" can't remember which).

You'd rather a set of shit tyres that actually fit the wheel than a set of sticky tyres that are the completely wrong size for your wheels. Buy CB's tyres or at least a set in the sizes which he listed.

Yes if money wasn't a factor then I would most definitely be running some 9" wheels with 245/40 tyres, or in this case buy CB's tyres.
But with my year 12 exams in 2 weeks I have no time to be working and thus no coin for any mods for the time being, hence why I picked up these cheap tires hoping they would suffice to and from school for a month or so. I didn't buy these tires hoping I would get some mad times at Winton or so I could look 'stance'.

:)

My brother went to hand in the plates from the EP3 today, turns out that while insurance said it couldn't be registered again, its on the repairable write-off list (I'm going to try and get that confirmed in writing though), so I think I should fix it and get it back on the road instead of swapping the good bits into something else and scrapping a genuine shell.

Assuming I need to get it back to 100% stock condition, I'm going to need most of the interior plastics, headlining, rear seat, maybe door cards/dash/vents, instrument binacle cover, windscreen and passenger side rear glass. The front seats I can get retrimmed and seatbelts I can get brand-new.

I'm guessing I either need to find someone with a crashed EP3 in Australia, or see if someone like Jesse Streeter can source an interior in Japan?

Just use the good bits and k swap an ed/ef/eg/ek/dc2 because for what it will cost you to get the car fixed and engineered to become eligible for rego again, it is not worth it once you consider resale value.

Otherwise strip it and turn it into a dedicated track car

I ended up finding the regulations for putting a repaired write-off back on the road in SA and it does look to be a pretty annoying system, they want invoices for all parts used and VINs of the cars they came from, every step photographed, engineers reports and metallurgists reports.... Seems like it could get expensive :(

A complete restoration project with the added authority checks and compliance [$$$] to boot. Not worth it in the end... You won't get through on the first try... or the second... probably not even the fifth try... The more tries, the more time and money, eventually you'll be able to buy a EP3R + mods -_-

When looking for a Air/Fuel gauge, should i be going with just the normal narrow band or a wideband one? Our EP3 already come with wideband O2 sensors so wouldn't the normal ones read as a wideband since its essentially reading off the ECU? I notice the wideband ones also come with a seperate o2 sensor :/

DreadAngel
19-10-2013, 06:37 PM
A/F Wideband Gauges, generally the good ones have their own O2 sensor rather than relying on the factory one. More reliable and accurate would be my guess =P

UNA91
19-10-2013, 10:06 PM
Just thought maybe i could save some coin since our ep3 already came with a stock wideband sensor so i could just wire a gauge to read it off the ecu, where as some cars only come with a narrow band so they would benefit more with a aftermarket wideband o2 sensor. idk maybe my understanding is all wrong lol :|

21-10-2013, 10:19 PM
As in the past, the civic and the teg( rsx) shared floor pans, as a result, anything that bolted to the floor pans( lower unibody) is interchangable.....but that does not mean the parts are the same. Everything on the dc5 is more geared toward performance than the ep3.

Suspension....

ft lca....same but the bushings are different( stiffer)
ft sway...same mounting locations but different stiffness and size
ft brakes.....ep3 02-03= the same as the em2, 04-05 ep3=same as the dc5 base
tie rod ends.....ep3= 15mm nut with 12mm balljoint shaft, dc5 =19mm nut with 15mm ball joint shaft.
ft struts and springs.....ep3 = lower rate springs, softer damping smaller hole for the tie rod end than all of the dc5's. Dc5 type s 05-06 had the springs wound in the oppiset direction, other spring will not fit them.
ft sub frame.....different part #'s so the are different.

r lca....different shock mounting gap, different bolt pattern on the trailing arm to the lca, different bushings.
r shock....different lower shock bushing size( dc5 is wider by 3mm), springs and damping are different.
r sway....different size and stiffness....see the swaybar thread in the suspension section.

motor

the ep3 k20a3 is not the same as the k20a3 in the base...for starters, the ep3 a3 has a balance shaft oil pump whle the dc5 base does not....cams are different, heck most of the part numbers do not match....so they are not the same motor.....but they can be swapped and the base motor will run off of the ep3 ecu as long as you change the intake manifold and tb.

for the total n00b's...the ep3 ecu will not run any combo of the k20a2/z1/z3 ....you want to run that, its kpro time.

how's that for a start?

Just get an oil filter sandwich plate and put your sensor there, best you do an oil change while you're there. I used the grommet at the firewall on the passenger side and used a clothes hanger bent straight to feed the wire into the dash, remove your glovebox and it'll come out thru there.

Then just wire the gauge to a switched power source, like your cig lighter socket

By reducing the operating temperature of the engine, you will need to tune the car accordingly for the lower temps. Going s/c will produce alot of engine bay heat and increase intake air temps. Better off turbocharging

As far as I know, F&R EP3 uses same as AUDM DC5R/S rotors. Pads are same for EP3/DC5/S2000

For cheapie street, just get RDA blanks and some good pads. If you don't mind a bit of squealing when cold, Project Mu Spec B grab nicely. Alternatively Ferodo DS2500 are fairly cheap and seem to be decent but a bit dusty

Genuine Mugen lip is fiberglass, there should also be a serial number and mugen stamp on the undertray on the inside... atleast mine does and i'm confident mines genuine as it was one of the last ones to come out for the PFL model. you look like youre pretty low though man. im guessing the rear is natural like -3? todds tie rods and camber adjustment all round would make it handle sick after a good alignment

I was actually much lower in the rears but i recently changed my wheels to +24 and had to raise the rears by about an inch or so... I don't have camber kit in the rear so can't adjust, so will just have to make do for now until i decide to purchase one... the fronts remained the same height with slight scrub on driving on uneven roads.. I have adjustable camber plates on my coilovers on the front so can adjust to my liking, so might play around with it later and maybe change it to around -2 to -3..

what camber settings for front and rear would you guys say is most aggressive without dramatic affect of camber wear on the tyres?

charliebrown
07-11-2013, 09:26 AM
It's toe that kills tyres not camber. Settings depends on the tyres you're using. For street tyres, something like -2f/-1r is sufficient to handle pretty good and not attract the poopo

Just got my wheel alignment fuark it feels much better, rear end less twitchy. camber -0.5f/-1.5r, toe 0f/0.7r

Is that toe in or out at the rear? Also I would either reduce the amount of camber in the rear, or increase in the front, as if you decide to do a hill run the rear will get snappy due to the increase in camber front vs rear

0.7 toe in each side. Josh at TT recommended it, said it would help to balance out the neg camber in the back and make rear end more stable?

All natural camber atm. I'm still waiting to order shortened tie rods and coilovers, and put them in with F+R camber kit at the same time then get it set up properly. +1 for traction tyres

Firstly, they can't find your car.

Secondly your toe is off, your camber at the front is un even

With the camber plates, they should of got the even camber settings.

Even camber settings only ideal when they do the alignment with a person in the drivers seat.

Usually the front drivers wheel has less camber than the passenger, to account for the weight in drivers seat.

Once you sit in car camber should be almost even.

But hes got more camber on the drivers side compared to the left side. So I'm a bit confused..

Make more sense to remove the Test pipe and put in place the Hi-Flow CAT as a test pipe is also known as a De-CAT :)

lol go Dixcel type M. they're street and track with low dust. :)
dixcel also have rotors, maybe check with garage88

I think you mix up Type M with Type Z?

Yeah dislike DS2500, did not like them at all -_-

Thanks for your help guys.

Alright, just to throw a curve ball . . . looks like we are moving early next year to be far closer to my work.

So, if I'll be doing a little more track work but still daily driving does the pad recommendation change?

For bias towards track, I'm assuming you'll be using tyres with grip levels like KU36, AD08, RE11, etc...

Use pads like Endless MX72/MX72RS where the operating temp can be a little higher than 0 with friction coefficients can go towards 0.50µ. To use these type of pads, ensure you have good rotors [Preferably heat treated to withstand the additional abrasive nature of these type of pads.] and tyres [Especially if you disable your ABS].

Nope, Dixcel type m is the way to go!

Type M on rear at most if tracking, NG for track at the front...

Hi everyone,

I want to get my major service out of the way for my JDM EP3R. It's a little over 70000km at the moment and IMG told me they only replaced the fluids when importing.

So my question is - which parts should I get replaced and what are their part numbers? The Honda dealer in Darwin (yes, we only have one Honda shop :( ) isn't very knowledgeable when it comes to the imports so would just like to go in there and get them to order parts without much fuss.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

There wasn't many things to do when I imported my car at 72xxx

Oil
Oil filter
Spark plugs part no. NGK ZFR6FIX-11
Air filter
Cabin filter
Fuel filter part no. 16010-S5A-932
MTF
Coolant
Valve clearances

Obviously check all bushes and items that wear out over time like engine mounts, drive belts, brakes, driveshaft/steering rack boots, tie rod ends

I believe some people also readjust/check the timing chain, tensioner and replace the water pump

Cheapest would be to get your oil from repco sales, oil filter/MTF/coolant from mekong spares, cabin filter from US ebay ($20-25), fuel filter from the UK (~$50), spark plugs from ebay (~$50-60).

You'd be paying a crazy amount on fluids and filters from honda dealer

I trust my mechanic and he's very thorough so not too concerned about the bushes and wear and tear parts you mentioned. However, I'll mention them to him before he gets stuck into the job :)

Where would I go to get the water pump? Not too keen on going through Honda...
Does Repco have genuine Honda oils or do you have experience with other oils that make your car perform better?

Anyone know if a dying alternator could cause struggle start? My car sounds like it struggles a bit to start, it doesn't start instantly like it use to. It's not so bad in my car but I'm just really picky with little issues and my other EP3 seems to have the same issue as well.

So, my engine light came on yesterday. Car still runs without skipping a beat so I have no idea what it could be. I disconnected the battery for about a minute yesterday and that cleared the engine light. But, it came back on this morning - car still runs perfectly.

Can anyone suggest anything? How can I diagnose the error?

Whatever you do, do not disconnect the battery again. This makes diagnosing problems that much harder for a mechanic. Best bet would be to get an OBDII scanner connected to the car and find out what the problem is

Just installed a Jackson racing supercharger and on my first start i could see the car was about to overheat on kpro (100' Celsius), i notice the coolant is not circulating at all and the fans aren't cooling... what could be the problem? I've checked all plugs and they're all in the correct place and properly in. Waterpump isn't making any funny noises either...

Make sure you've bled the system properly! Google some guides on how to do it.

its your tstat not opening. do it few times until bottom hose or bottom part of radiator starts to get hot.
once tstat fully opens, you can bleed coolant properly and all should be fine and yolo.

It's the tegiwa radiator, everything is positioned pretty much the same as stock. The problem is that none of the old coolant is flowing thru the lower radiator hose or into the upper radiator hose to the engine block, its like the thermostat is not opening. last thing i wanna do is replace the water pump

edit: my ect is going over 100 degrees, thermostat should have opened at around 89 degrees. I also notice the engine bay gets really hot

i know what youre talking abt, happens to me all the time
its easier to do it few times so coolant heats up as a whole.
if bottom part of your radiator or lower hose is cool, tstat most likely will not open even though temp of coolant in head is 100c

FEEL the lower part of radiator or lower rad hose. if cold, tstat not opening.

I had a look at the pump and the pulley seems fine, no leaks or worn bearings. Tested the tstat in boiling water and it opens up. What i think it might be is an airlock in the engine block. Theres no water/coolant behind the thermostat so it can't open up since there's nothing to heat it up. Possibly? Gonna get the car towed to mechanic to do a powerflush and see if it helps.

Update: I'm using a krpo base map with the k20a2 running jsrc. Could that be causing my cel to come up? Found out the jdm k20a doesn't have a vtec oil pressure switch. I unchecked it from kpro but it still comes up as soon as I erase it

No need for the offensive language mate.

Maybe you should have searched first or go through the "FD/FN2/EP3 Wheel Setup Guide" thread to see if the wheels will fit. Or even check the DC5 fitments cause they are similar. A lot of people are sick of answering questions about wheels because someone else has asked it before and the answer is always stick to +35.

Just by looking at Symphorced's DP, he has clearly played around with wheels on a EP3 before so he will have some knowledge about fitment. So why don't you get some manners and search before you ask silly questions.

You're better off buying new coils if you want the best out of it, not just for tracking but also for daily. I wouldn't buy a second hand part that's subjected to all kinds of abuse (both user, mechanical and environmental) and wear and tear. Especially on such a vital part of the car. But that's just my opinion

Ah true true, in that case which coils would you recommend? I hear that BC BRs are good but aren't the greatest for track purposes.

I'm looking for a daily that would perform well on the tracks.

There is an upside to buying used coils though, you can be sure that they aren't gonna break when you put them in.

Sure they might wear out sooner, but that's why you just take them apart and rebuild them

If they're rebuildable and if there is someone in the country to do a proper job of rebuilding them. Beware of suspension joints that claim they can rebuild any coilover, ensure they use the parts direct from manufacturer and to manufacturer specs, otherwise you'd be blowing a good deal of $$$ for a crap refresh that will last you less than 6mths...
