Ok in this thread most people have said their insurance is from 900-1600. But when i try to get a quote online i get more like 2-3k for an EP3. I am guessing most of you guys are under 25. I am 19, so what insurance cost should i be expecting? Also whats the insurance cost of an EP3 compared to S2000?

It depends on your age, area you live in, driving experience, driving records etc.

Yeah i saw u said u paid 800 on the Sydney EP3 thread, was assuming that was referring to insurance for EP3.

Umm i tried with alot of other ages and the price is still extreme for a S2000 think it was 2.7k for Just cars with driver above 25. EP3 gets a little better.

What company is the cheapest for S2000 and EP3?

Oh. Mine doesn't charge :(

Which iphone generation do you have? I think my iphone is too new for my pioneer deck to charge. Older generation of iphones used firewire charging which is my pioneer's method of charging unfortunately.

i'm using the iphone 3G which has 8GB memory. Also had my friend who has the 16GB 3GS plug it in and it worked out fine.

you might be better off with fire and theft to 10,000 rather than full compo your not covered for.

if i was working at an insurance company and a 60yo crashed her ep3, there will definitely be more inquiries than usual.

I assume you sent me a PM on boost... I'll just answer on here.

You don't NEED the Mugen front bar for the Mugen intake to work. I've been running my Mugen intake with my stock front bar for 3 years, and have NEVER had a problem with it. At one point I actually removed the grill to make more of a airflow for the intake, but noticed no difference.

Basically a quick run down on intakes for the DC5

Injen - Arguably the best intake you can get for the K20. Offers a great noise, and gives noticeable gains in top end power. There are no real problems with this intake. People that have a cry about "hydro lock" are kidding themselves. As has been proven time and time again, you have to drive INTO a lake and let the car run for it to take effect, splashes of water onto the filter do not effect the engine
Mugen - Great intake. The shear size of the panel filter, and the bottom half of the air box is MASSIVE, which is a very good thing as it can hold more air (durr). Again, no problems with this intake... expect for people saying you need to buy the Mugen front bar for it to work
Gruppe M - Again another great intake. Draws air from a cowl at the base of the window, and then feeds air to a pod filter. Again the air box itself is fairly large. Only problem with this intake is that SOME people seem to have problems with the cowl vibrating... a lot.

So going from Injen to Mugen you'll notice a drop in top end, but this is mainly due to a placebo effect, because you can't hear the Vtec crossover point as loudly, so you don't think you are going as fast.

At the end of the day for a car that is still running stock ECU, you'll loose maybe 2-3kw (which you can't feel with a bum dyno) and the car is going to be quieter... but you'll have a Mugen intake. Which is more important, overall power and noise, or JDM brownie points... I know which one I would choose.

There has also been experiments done by this guy about SRI (short ram intake) and CAI (Cold Air intake) and Gruppe M. Injen can get the coldest air, but since the piping is really long there is a large pressure drop which reduces the volume of air going into the engine. Gruppe M got a few degrees higher temp, but the pressure drop was lower. So Injen would be best bang for the buck and give u good gains at the top, while gruppe on the other hand will give u good increase across the whole range.

bling and some performance there in the gruppe m, no cutting required everything is given to you and the doublesided tape in excess, easy install. i like it thats why i bought it, had a look at injen before but opted for the gruppe. injen 1/3 of the price right or bit more same gains choose whatever you like buddy.

I have read in here that the EP3 uses oil. I have to top mine up like every 3 weeks ? Is this normal ?

Also I had a guy from work following me the other day said that there was a little bit 'o crap comming out the exhaust under heavy load. His words.

Once again is this normal or are they some deeper issues ya think ?

I dont really understand the video. It says idle, stationary and racing. Idle is just sitting there, stationary is reving engine to 5000rpm while sitting there, racing is? racing is while the car is moving?

For cars built before January 1983, the maximum noise level is 96 decibels and for newer cars the level is 90 decibels.

60RS is 94dB stationary so i think 70RS wont pass the test... lame :(

Ok so, just gonna jump in, and looking for some advice from the wise ones.
Looking at going an all motor build and amassed a few parts, got lucky really...
anyway currently have an 02 Ep3 with minimum modifications
- 87mm 12.5:1 CR Ross Racing Pistons
- HKS 87mm head gasket
- HKS spark plugs
- Toda N1 Rods
- Supertech valve springs + retainers
- Brian Crower stage 3 cams
- Toda free adjusting cam gears

On the car
- 2.5" custom exhaust
- UR pulleys
- Gruppe M ram air intake

will be buying
- ARP head studs
- new bearings
- Hondata Kpro

thinking of also getting
- RBC or RRC IM
- Large TB
- Maybe Toda headers + zorst... (reason maybe is that there is minimal gain to be had with the upgrade of EP3 headers, or so i have heard)

1) have i missed anything?
2) Suggest a good builder?

cheers folks

The standard ep3 header is less than ideal. Considering that you are trying to
Make the engine use as much air and timing and compression as possible - id def. Use a good proven aftermarket header. Why not 3 inch from collector back ?

I strongly suggest Adrian @ TODA AU for the build. Located in thornleigh Sydney and a trader on here. Great down to earth guy and fantastic to deal with.

Give him a call on 0401 869 524 tell Him bennjamin off ozhonda strongly recommends him :-)

Just a rant - my otherwise standard ep3r is hitting 375km per tank around town. No thrashing. V8 thirst with truck performance. Fantastic !

They do sound different. Personally I think TI sounds better than stainless.

I had a 50RS on my Jazz and my friend had a 304R on his Jazz. There's more drone coming from the stainless and it sounds somewhat more louder. Tbh the 304R sounds like any other cannon axle backs but that may just be me. Different people have preferences to their ears.

I'm averaging 450, with a deviation of 25,when the fuel warning light comes on. With mixed city/hwy driving/WOT

Don't know if this is a myth or not. Maybe full syn oil would offer better fuel economy?

2.5" was used by the previous owner of the car for ideal backpressure.
3" would be too loud but may resort to 3" piping ending in a smaller muffler to keep the noise down.

I did think of Toda, but because Adrian is so busy the build may take longer than i would like it to...

Since you have everything, the turn time would be around 2~3 weeks depending on machining.
Can even do you a real good deal on an RRC & throw in a blue rocker cover too :p

Going back to you mentioning your friend seeing smoke coming out of the exhaust, if the color was black then I wouldn't worry too much. Your car may just running a bit rich. My friend's ep3 used 5w30 castrol edge and I also see black soot coming from his car when his hit VTEC. I won't be surprised if I had black soot too.

I think it's fine as long it's not blowing blue/grey smoke.

You're not doing it right :p small feet should be easier to heel toe
Don't really notice any scratches but there's always scratch x, magnetic plates got it's cons its metal rubbing against meal and that would mean scratches will occur more than plastic plates. Has happened to me with my Lexus so o never placed a mag plates on,also if it's on too long over the years will perm stick to your car and possibly melt if parked in the sun all day everyday. Another reason is also prolong use of mag plates is that your gonna have a dark square on the hood and notice a colour difference in the paintwork.

btw..doesn't the plastic P plate scratch the car a bit sometimes? i'm using magnetic ones atm to avoid it.
and does anyone find that their accelerator is a little too low for heel-toe? coz i'm finding it a little difficult to do it.
have to push the brake down all the way to actually reach the accel. but it could just be my small feet. =P
any views on this?
(pics will come later)

You're not doing it right :p small feet should be easier to heel toe
Don't really notice any scratches but there's always scratch x, magnetic plates got it's cons its metal rubbing against meal and that would mean scratches will occur more than plastic plates. Has happened to me with my Lexus so o never placed a mag plates on,also if it's on too long over the years will perm stick to your car and possibly melt if parked in the sun all day everyday. Another reason is also prolong use of mag plates is that your gonna have a dark square on the hood and notice a colour difference in the paintwork.

mmm....never knew about the colour difference. thanx for that! =D +rep!
and yes...i'm prolly not doing heel-toe correctly either! xD
atm...my seating position is having my left leg pretty much straight with the clutch all the way down. (maybe too far for heel-toe?)

Long Live the Hoon Kings! haha

Your clutch is worn when there is slipping. If your thrust bearing or clutch release bearing is dead, it will make rattling noises when your depress the clutch pedal.

I encountered my first episode of that dredded vibration noise when driving in heavy rain last night... I'm glad I read about it briefly a few mths before I purchased the car... Or else I be scratching my head trying to figure out what the heck it was!!!

I did a bit of light reading last night, couldn't really find any posts with a solution to the problem other than bending the heat shield on the exhaust or adding extrators.

does ur car sound like a tractor, v8, a big deep drone noise ?? I use to have this problem when i had my stock header butted up to my aftermarket cat back. Read that alot of owners of dc5r and s had the same problem and when they changed their header the problem went away. Later on down the track i finally upgraded my header and i havent once had the problem arise.

Rep point right there! It squeaked afew times but that's about it.

The squeaks can come from 2 parts. The clutch release bearing and/or the fork pivot. My mechanic told me it ain't a serious problem.

My mech reduced a bit of squeak noises by greasing up the fork pivot (But tight to reach given there isn't much room to get to the clutch slave cylinder.)

I had similar squeaks with my Jazz.

TanitY
10-10-2010, 09:23 AM
No worries man.

Well the accelerator pedal is a straight bolt on, just take out the old whole accelerator pedal assembly and replace it, pretty much straight bolt in. .

The clutch and the brake pedals, it is very difficult to take out the clutch and brake assembly as the bolts are hard to reach so you must take out the rubber pedals and replace it with the dc5r pedals. So in this case you have to take out the rivets on the dc5r pedals which is abit of a pain but yeah its the only way.

The deadrest pedal is a straight bolt on.

and i got my pedals for around 130 from memory, which included the rest pedal.

cheers

No worries mate,

The price that i bought it at was second hand, and was only in decent condition. (had some scratches and stuff). Brand new would cost around 350 according to jdmconcept.http://www.jdmconcept.com.au/index.php?option=com_jdm&p=detail&vid=36&cid=389 and most likely even more if you buy it from the honda dealers (probably over 400 lol)

However i have found a place where it sells it relatively cheap brand new. really good site for honda parts from the usa. and with the record high strength of the aussie dollar this is the best option. $226 brand neww
http://www.icbmotorsport.com/jdmindc5tyrp2.html

Or if you dont mind second hand you can find these pedals like i did for around 150.

Sorry mate i dont have the part number for these pedals.

well from memory the accel pedal you cant remove the plastic cover on the pedal so if youre going to install the mugen pedal youre probably going to need to screw the mugen pedal ontop of the old plastic pedal, and youll probably have a extra thick accelerator pedal if you know what i mean. lol.

Antv

mugen dc5r pedal set from memory is the same as ep3 and im currently using them. Kit comes with clutch, brake, accelerator. But as tranity said the accelerator is a pain in the ass. U need a flat head screw driver and u need to pry the top part of the plastic cover open so u can slide it off the accelerator pedal

I was searching around for the exact spec of the EP3R K20A engine. I was specifically looking for the redline, rev limiter and vtec engagement. But after searching a bit, sources conflicted with each other. I think some people assumed the JDM DC5R has exactly that same spec as the EP3R but it actually isn't.

According to wiki these are the specs

2001-2005 JDM Honda Civic Type-R (EP3)
- 1,998 cc (1.998 L; 121.9 cu in), 215 PS (158 kW; 212 hp) @8000, 200 N·m (150 lb·ft) @7000:

2001-2007 JDM Honda Integra Type-R (DC5)
1,998 cc (1.998 L; 121.9 cu in), 220 PS (160 kW; 220 hp) @8000, 206 N·m (152 lb·ft) @7000:

Wiki also had another table
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p242/czman863/Capture-10.png

I tried to match up the specs of the DC5R and EP3R engine to find the redline, rev limiter and vtec engagement of the two.

So can someone just confirm whats the redline, rev limiter and vtec engagement of an EP3R.

JohnO
13-10-2010, 07:45 PM
i'll tell you now rev limiter is around 5-6 when stationary but Steve will give you the exact value cause im not a hoon king. vtec is like 6200rpm +- , redline 7.8+(this one im just guessing cars too far)
a jap spec dc5r >ep3 but ive seen so many videos of the total opposite occuring =) plus it was more expensive than a ep3 on best motoring.

can I use a ngk iridium: BKR7EIX
or do I need the ones with a 1.1 gapping: BKR7EIX-11
I was also recommended to get the ZFR6FIX-11

I have a spare set of the BKR7EIX (with standard gapping) its not listed on the box or the ngk site, i'll have to measure it and check. Just seeing if I can use them or should I just buy some new ones with the correct gapping?
