guys ive had this small rattling sound lately like as if theres a rock inside a tin can boucning around. After alot of research and asking a few ppl here and there i think ive come to the conclusion that it is the clutch throw out bearing? whatever that is..
When i press the clutch the noise is still there but MUCH MUCH quieter (the noise only comes in cold) and has been getting louder over the past few weeks, when warm .. (very rarely makes noise).
So yeh..
1. what is a clutch throw out bearing
2. is it pricey to fix? (roughly how much)
3. what happens if i dont fix it
supanoodle
23-12-2010, 01:14 PM
im actually interested in this too as my car makes the same noise but regardless of cold or not...

24-12-2010, 06:06 PM
cost f the actual bearing is like $50. but since you have to drop the gearbox to change it then may as well get your other bearings done (~$100) and a new clutch (whatever you want to pay! price varies widely) and about 3-4hrs in a workshop. good workshop price is $60 p/h so all up lets use about $400 as a guide.
slimx
25-12-2010, 11:04 PM
what if u have a brand new clutch? my clutch is only 2 months old? do i have to change the hole thing again :S ?
U reckon the bearing would be covered under warranty? because i got it done professionally.. and i have warranty if the bearing is a part of the CLUTCH itself it should be free 4me :)
stevo716
25-12-2010, 11:21 PM
thrust bearing shud be part of the cltuch kit, so warranty
spigot bearing prob wont be

supanoodle

think the bearing will be completely seperate to the clutch , even tho both requires removing the box out they wont do it cause no issues with the actual clutch.
my clutch is really soft and the friction point is like ...how do i explain it..... (---------------) this long! lol when i drove my friends civic it was only (----) this long.
Is there any way of adjusting it? or should i just throw in an exedy.
slimx lemme know if u find any good workshops , more than happy to get it done together , maybe can get discount =D
stevo716

underneath the intake pipe there be a black arm, thats the clutch arm, connected will be a pretty thick cable, thats the clutch cable, along that is a black knob.

who?
where did you manage to pick that up from? pretty awesome score, looks like all 8 pieces and all in good nick too.
I paid $500 for my full kit about 3.5 years ago but it has a couple of fixable cracks in the front bar. Some day I'll actually get around to fitting it.
Still jealous, another kit would look good on the 6..
slimx
30-12-2010, 10:17 PM
well my car is for sale...............
and i do have a FULL KIT :)
100% Original :) which im selling with the car lol
Rayle
30-12-2010, 10:24 PM
Picked it up from the wreckers. When I went in to get the blower motor, I asked about a new front bar and they told me they had an optional front lip that was later revealed to be the whole kit! The boss said they'd bought about 150 DA9s, and only 2 had theoptional kit.
There's really only 1 crack that's on the rear lip but it's underneath, although some mounting hardware and a few clips are missing from here and there.
I don't suppose anyone wants to trade their Torino Red kit for this, otherwise I'll just paint it!

pretty low k's
ive done fair bit of maintenance on mine now
and just manual converted
the engines rnt great
blocks is almost like the b18a
no girdles or anythin so wont handle high revs
pretty mild vtec cams as well
and wat parts u need?
mooshie
06-01-2011, 07:11 PM
Its not about what I need, its about what I want :)
slim side bump strips, climate control etc, rear control arm, under hood lining, and more!
Having said that i have better things to spend money on at the moment, so hence not buying this car
Edit: just realised that the Auto B16 listed only revs to 7700rpm according to the tacho in the pic, My 6 goes out to 8000rpm, I didnt know that there was a difference with the autos?
stevo716
07-01-2011, 10:54 PM
the tacho it self goes to 9, and it redlined at 7200,
just put my manual in and new ecu
i redline at 8 now xD

An interesting point I found out for the DA9 front suspension that may help you guys out.
Since the front upper suspension wishbone rubber mount bushes flog out from age and start squeaking/creaking, I took them out to get some new ones fitted.
Went to a suspension joint and they said none were listed for a DA9, so I asked them to get in some DC2 bushes and measure them up.
They fit! so it is now part DC2 type R. Got the urethane kit with offset pins so camber can be adjusted too. So of you need em, just get in the DC2 ones.

swapped out the JDM filler neck with an AUDM one from the red car today. no more fuel leaking from the filler neck cos you cant get a cap to fit it!
JDM on the left, AUDM on the right.

oem jdm cap ftw!!!!
i like cuz its got the anti tightenin stuff lol
clicks
l
mooshie
17-01-2011, 06:28 PM
what does the OEM JDM cap look like? Mine had a replacement CPC cap that clicked as well but it didnt seal properly, pretty sure it was a replacement for a DA9. besides as you can see in the photo, the rim of the filer neck is actually separate and sealed with some kind of rubber/sealant that was all perished and coming out, you can actually see some of the seal on the flap in photo 2.
I guess my car is no longer fully genuine JDM :(
stevo716
17-01-2011, 06:35 PM
ugh, maybe mine is replaced, but doesnt leak tho
question, what is the red light in below the handbrake one?
its look like somethin overheating
basicly since i did my manual conversion that light stays on
also in general,
my car seems to overheat regardless of that light,
ive changed my thermostat, theres no leaks, radiator is fine, thermos turn on.
the car seems to overheat after bitof thrashin, if u start driving normally it cools down, so that wat makes me think radiator works,
if u stop it starts overheatin again..
im running out of ideas, gonna put my gauges in a sec to check if its the sensor but yeh
mooshie
18-01-2011, 10:25 PM
I doubt its the sensor as it is picking up a variable reading consistent with what you are doing.
Seems like the cooling capacity is reduced and hence it is overheating more easily.
Could be caused by-
Blockage in the airflow, easy to see and fix.
Air pockets or bubbles in the coolant, just do a proper bleed which I am sure you know how
Blockage in the coolant flow or radiator. These are old cars and even if this is its second replacement rad it could have some block by now.
You should be able to get it flow tested for pretty cheap at any radiator place, or just give it a reverse flush.
As for the light, I'll have a look tomorrow night but I think the one you are referring to has something to do with the emission control or O2 sensor.

yeh ill try what u said, lol we broke somethin else on the cooling system so need to get that replaced, where the blled valve is,we actaully broke the metal its attached to
idk how but yeh
as with the sensor, wud it be somethin todo with that extra sensor we have on the exhaust cuz, i accidently pulled that out lol....
car still ran so didnt think much of it

Hey Guys. I have a 1990 DA9 that literally just clocked over 100,000 genuine kms. Im interested in knowing if there are any other DA9's that have kms this low or lower? From my brief search on carsales etc, it seems I have way less kms than any other for sale. (I bought it from a wealthy elderly man who had other vehicles, he hardly ever drove it)

I am pretty excited.....
after years of waiting looks like Skunk2 have finally released the camber arm specific to the DA! I am embarking on a full suspension overhaul soon and looks like these are out at just the right time. no more crappy EBay arms.
Might wait for a couple of reviews before I get myself a set but they do look the goods.

Damn they look good. Might get them for when I overhaul my sussy on the new teg I am getting tomorrow
Quick trivia for you guys
Is it worth paying $2,850 for a :
- 90 model teg
- good burgundy paint, paint is still glossy on 90% of the car
- only few dings and minor rust bubbling in rear 1/4 windows both L + R - no major dents/scratches
- 202,000 kms
- apparent changed timing belt at 200,000 but no way of knowing
- 6 months rego
- cold aircon and not very bumpy/rattly when driving
- clear revs check and vehicle history report
- Car's stock standard with OEM honda sound system (not lowered, no exhaust, standard air filter)
Bad point sare :
- the central locking doesnt work
- no service history
Thanks guys
Oh and, what DA Integra specific things should I look for when test driving her one last time before I hand over my hard earnt (borrowed) cash lol

<3 you all DA owners
wheres your white da9?
last i remembered you needed a steering rack?
i just got my steering rack re-conditioned and converted to no p/s (different gears to make steering lighter) for less than $300
$2850 for a da9 is pretty pricey IMO
espionage85
29-01-2011, 09:49 PM
ok, wow just looked on carsales
our cars are still worth $2000+? lol
sorry, my oppinion was given because of the last 2 da's that ive purchased
1 was $500 with shit exterior but neat interior
1 was $1100 with immac interior good motor, but keyed all round
so yea after looking at carsales, $2850 is not bad
mooshie
30-01-2011, 06:40 AM
a DA in good nick should still go for up to 4k, there are heaps that go for under 2 but they all have something wrong with them.
Couple of things to look at-
Take oil cap off and see if it is clean in the head
Trailing arm bushes
See if the air con etc belts are new, this would give an indication of the timing belt being done, should also be able to see if the valve cover has been removed, look for new gasket goo next to the camshaft seals
Check brake master cyliinder for leaks
Gearbox/driveshafts
Engine mounts
Tie rod and upper/lower front end ball joints
Wheel bearings
Steering rack
Dampness in passenger footwell
Meh, that's all I can think of now.. Just woke up (sad that this is the first thing I do...)
Central locking actuators are easy to test and replace if need be, pain if it is a deeper electical problem but unlikely.

Thanks Mooshie
My white da9 was sold ages ago, but I miss them and want another
I thought about the DA for 2850 but decided not to get it as the interior was a little old and the central locking was not working.
Found another 90 model on carsales for 3100 with only 147,000 kms and log books, so I might go check out that and another one before I decide
The guy wanted me 2 put a deposit of 300 on it on the day, im like uhh I only got 100 and hes like nah 300 ay Im like for what reason a deposit's a deposit, hes like umm reasons.. Made me kinda suss
Also 1 more question
I can't remember if my old DA did this but do you guys get a burning rubber smell in the motor after a drive? when i test drove it I could smell burning rubber or oil, which obviously if burning oil means oil leak onto exhaust etc but I couldnt find any leaks
what else could it be

can anyone explain this, i was rolling my da down the driveway (engine off and in neutral) and a humming sound started to come from the brakes at the back on the right side, i stopped the car from rolling but the humming went on for a while? also i sometimes hear the same thing when i drive so does anyone know what it is?
thanks

31-01-2011, 06:11 PM
hand brake might be on a lil
take ur wheel off and spin it
see if u hear anythin
or ur rotor might be warped
mooshie
31-01-2011, 07:39 PM
could be the stone guard or something rubbing and then when the car stops it still has a vibration and therefore noise in it?
it is the thin piece of sheet metal behind the brake rotor, just a guess though as I cannot think of anything else. Weird that it would do it when the car isnt moving
ben11
31-01-2011, 08:13 PM
ahhk cheers, nah wouldnt be rotors they were machined pretty recently so yeah maybe the rotor guard or hand brake which is pretty loose atm

actually my issue is more like im going at crusing speed on 5th gear and when i shift down to 4th or third and give it the beans (only to overtake or whatever) i dont get any real power until i go past 4kRPM then it starts building up power like normal.
I dont think this is normal and it feels verry sluggish, though ive never driven any other DA9 before but any other car ive driven will be able to pick up speed and RPM at and constant so something is bugging the crap outta me that its not really pulling.
im starting to think the car has no gentleman vegetables anymore...

stevo716
09-02-2011, 07:15 PM
is based on low oil pressure, mine stays on for bit too,
then turns off
long not turning on while driving say ur fine
menacer
09-02-2011, 11:10 PM
yea mine does it too, not a problem unless it stays on. or as stevo said comes on while driving, lots of cars (especially those with a few hundred on the clock) will have light come on for a sec or 2 while engine builds oil pressure.

just though I would post up a few pics of what I am spending my time on at the moment, I should start a build thread one day-
Traction bar install, interesting to note that the bar including all bolts etc saves 3kg in weight-
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/4417/sam0192d.jpg
Aluminium Fluidyne radiator, fans are in a weird place to make room for the turbo-
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/8702/sam0204h.jpg
Turbo on its way out and once I get a couple of minor issues sorted a GT3071R will be going in-

my workspace-

unfortunately the 'minor issues' probably wont be sorted out until Tuesday as it takes a while to get parts, so she is going to have to sit there limp and on stands for a while. Aside from that, all that is left to do is modify the wastegate actuator bracket to give me more room and then everything can go back in ready for a tune.

Mooshie man, that is one sweet workspace...
mooshie
26-02-2011, 03:32 PM
It was one of the reasons we bought this house (dont tell my missus that...) there is a double carport in front of the garage and the lounge room and study is on top plus a small storage room off to the left of that photo.
I have a small garden shed waiting for me to pick up so that i can get all the damn garden equipment out of there, its all stored on the other side of the red car at the moment.
seriously, after years of renting and although I always had double garages, it is so good to have a workbench, vice, and room in front of the cars to work in rather than either having to move one car out or work in the driveway.

do u have a hoist aswell kos the the grey da looks like its up some how doesnt seem like jackstands
mooshie
27-02-2011, 03:05 PM
I wish... I just use the jack in the photo, it goes up to 500mm which is abut the highest I could find anywhere for under $200. Use the jack points at the front where the tow hook is and do one side at a time with a smaller jack to just support it when you move the big one so there is not too much of an angle with only one stand underneath

hey mooshie, wats the light underneath the handbrake light mean? on the da6
i know its connected to that sensor on the exhaust
its been coming on sometimes? just wonderin wat it means
It's for the catalytic converter, it connects to the sensor just behind the cat with a simple circuit directly to the dash. The sensor loses continuity when there is a problem with the cat, usually excessive temperature causing the orange light on the dash to illuminate.

when you do your engine install, I assume you will be getting a new exhaust to compliment it, should solve your problem if you get a new cat as well.

It doesn't go through the ecu, it will stay on regardless of ecu or cat. Ground the wire either underneath the car or as it goes through the car underneath the drivers seat

Grrr.. ****in spewing right now.
Just broke an exhaust manifold stud off in the head while I was putting everything back together, that'll teach me for trying to do it by feel instead of using the torque wrench.
wouldnt you know it, Honda has none in stock in SA and cant get one till Friday, I have the thread fix man coming tomorrow morning to get the old one out but damn its going to be an expensive lesson.
I wonder if I could get the thread man to remove a stud from my B18A head I have laying around and use that?
frustrating thing is, everything is ready to go, finished all the custom work I had to do etc and now I have time off and cant put it all in the car
Edit: just checked part numbers and they are the same for both heads. I have a few generic studs laying around too but I would rather go genuine for something like this (superstitious!)
stevo716
02-03-2011, 06:58 PM
haha just use generic man, i had to extend intake ones cuz of the gasket i put on it
but yeh b18a ones shud be same

Little update. Thread man came this morning and took the broken stud out with no issues then got the badly rounded nut off the manifold on the red car and took out one of those studs all up cost $88 which is not bad considering they come to you, great bloke too. Even put the stud into the head for me.
Aside from that, got the turbo all installed with modified wastegate actuator braket, got the radiator installed with all kinds of custom brackets to hold it and the fans in place. There is so little room in the front of a DA for turbo and a bigger radiator its not funny.
Just got to refill and bleed coolant, mount up the traction bar, do a stringline alignment, pressure up the oil and then she should be right to start. Tuning will be in a couple of weeks. I have taken heaps of pics along the way, might have to do a couple of writeups when I get a chance.

That's exactly what I was implying. It's like aftermarket engine mounts; structural parts which specifically haven't been ADR tested.
An engine mount is far less conspicuous than a big shiny replacement crossmember.
I don't have a turbo so I don't need all that crossmember space. I just replaced the standard OEM rubber bushing with a spherical from Progress.

04-03-2011, 07:31 PM
I have a contact to get the car all engineered up and have the cash, but at the moment the next job is replacing all bushings, balljoints etc and renew the suspension setup. Engineering is the next step after that. SA is a bit different than the other states in that we dont have inspections, just cops can pull you over. In 11 years of driving a modified car that only happened once and he let me off anyway, didnt believe me when I told him it was a '91!

hmm the actuall muffler one looks interesting, it might fit where the current rear muffler is, just height is rele the only prob
edit* ok lil more research later i find out its 220mm in height from the motor
basicly height clearance is my prob, ill have to see how tall the stock one is or how much room in the chassis
but it rele wet right now outside and dark so itll have to wait haha

hi guys im new,
I have a DA9 LS B18A1 5 speed, engine has 255 xxx ks on it and runs abit sick so i just bought a DA9 auto with an immaculate B18A1 with 160 xxx ks on it, so i want to take the engine out of the manual shell and replace it with the engine from the auto shell.
Questions:
# will the auto engine bolt onto the manual gearbox without cutting or drilling?
# is this nearly the same as converting an auto DA9 into a manual, but not having to worry about installing clutch and pedal? just go straight to the engine gearbox part of the conversion?
# is there a guide for this?
any help would be great
Thanks guys

12-03-2011, 08:58 AM
Hey man, welcome
everythin will bolt up normally
only thing is, if there both series 1 or 2.
what year are the cars?
if both cars are same year, then its straight swap
basicly take engine out, take auto off engine,
take other engine out, take manual off, take flywheel clutch off. put flywheel clutch manual on good engine, and bolt it back in.
its a bit of work, if ur mechanically minded its quite doable,
also convertin auto da to manual, isnt easy haha, ive done it before
but a straight engine swap shud be fine.
theres a service manual on the web somewhere to, help a lil.
itll tell u how to remove engine, and torque specs.
while doin this id get a new clutch
but basicly if any of this worries u a lil, go to a workshop and get it done, but couldnt begin to tell u how much itd cost

The year only really matters for which clutch you get, early years are different to the 92-93.
Give the engine a good service before you put it in as well, new seals, timing belt, water pump etc. Do it now and it can save a lot of mucking around down the track

hi mooshie , both my Da's are '90' will be doing as much as i can to the engine before it goes in , besides timing belt, water pump ,oil/fuel filter, sparkies and leads, anything else you can think of?? and are there many seals to replace?
trying to find extractors and a bigger throttle body to slap on also.
i had a pipe welded up to replace the old intake when i got the manual DA9 3 years ago , but its the same length as stock box, so i was gunna extend it down through that hole under the stock box, is that the best place to have your pod?
thanks mate
i got the car manual online and printed it out, it's my bible atm lol,

hi guys =)
well to clear a few things up guys, both DA's are built in '89' , are same engine(B18A1) to the tee, bar the tranny, i have a heavy duty clutch in the manual gear box ,and it feels ok still, but i think i'll take your advice and put a new clutch in as i cant be bothered doing this twice. Now i've been trying my very hardest to understand the whole obd0 and obd1 thing and im not quite getting it.now i understand that if i swap a motor other than the original, in my case ill need to change my obd thing( lol soz) , but because i have the same engine , and they run off the same computer, i dont need to upgrade, but if i wanted to tune my car to suit the mods that i do/way that i drive, then i have to upgrade???, i was looking on the Hondata web site and they say i need to upgrade to a s100 or sumthing??
From personal experience guys, is upgrading my computer worth it? is it hard? and what kind of $$$ am i looking at??
thanks again guys
mooshie
13-03-2011, 07:32 AM
Duh, sorry forgot about OBD0/1. Stevo is right, should be a drop in swap if they are both the same year. I was only thinking mechanically not electrically
As for the computer, you only need to change that if you have modifications that affect the tuning. You will see a benefit even on a stock motor but bang for buck there are better things to spend money on first.
Personally I would get- CAI,exhaust, cat, header, cams, computer, throttle/intake manifold, internals etc etc. In that order. Purchase price is about $500 on an S100 second hand then about $600 for tuning
stevo716
13-03-2011, 08:14 AM
if same year no need to change ur computer everythin will build up,
id change sump gasket, and check the rear main seal, not that hard to change,
then rocker cover gasket, and the spark plug ones, theres good kits in america for around 100 dollars that come with alot of gaskets
oxy sensor is always good to replace, even tho there lil expensive around 90 bucks if i remember correctly.
check the pipe at the back that connects from water pump to thermostat, if hasnt corroded that like to leak, pretty much check all the hoses see if there still rubbery if too hard change em, same deal with gaskets rele.
i can help with exhaust part of deal got one for sale hi flow and 2 1/4 piping ;)
once u start moddin alot, as mooshie said, id only rele tune once u start changing internals such as cams, anythin that huge changes air flow, then its recommened to change to odb1
but with I/H/E, thers no need to tune
Good luck man

Ahahahahah, nice improvisation ,
someone told me that you can get a waste gate or somthing? (us Noob's beleive anything we are told)but if u made it threw that weather i shud b right
Well i rang Vic Roads to ask what they thought about the whole going a 2 seater, they said it doesnt require a engeneers cert unless you are adding to the standed amount of passengers you can carry , but in saying that i drove around with a hollow rear for about a month, and i liked it , didnt think it was loud, but then stock exhaust .............not custom =)))
wanna make it neat , wanted a cross bar , custom side plastic pannels, and carpet throughout the whole rear if that would work.
