What's the differences for using synthetic? Besides the ridiculous price... i'm not sure what mine is. It says "combined with synthetic technology" so im guessing it's semi-synthetic? 10w-40 btw. only ever used this so not sure what the differences are, but good price, especially when on sale

Whats better for a honda 10w30 or 10w40??

all depends on the condition of you're motor. usually most 90's hondas will burn 10W30 under heavy driving because it's thin and tends to burn on high revving engines with a bit of milage on them.

the first number, in this case 10W, represents the base thickness of the oil. the higher the number, the thicker the oil is to start with, and the lower it is the thinner. most cars come out new with a 10W oil in them, or in some cases 5W.

the second number in this case, 30 represents how much the oil thins out under heat (high rpm, hot temperatures). the higher the second number, the less the oil thins out under heat and high RPM, which is a common cause of oil burning and blue smoke at high RPM. so with high RPM engines usually it's better to have something higher then 30 unless it's pretty new or really low kms i guess.

here's a range of popular oil viscosities in an order of thinner oils to thicker oils:
0W40, 5W30, 5W40, 5W50, 10W30, 10W40, 10W50, 15W40, 15W50, 20W50, 20W60

the best way to pick the right oil thickness for your car is experimenting on which oils burn and which don't.

say if you have a 10W40 oil in your engine, and it burns easily then it's time to step up to a 15W thickness. however if it only burns at the very top end then instead of a 10W40, you could use a 10W50, as it doesn't thin out as easily and can handle higher temperatures.

another thing to look for is oil "grade", this represents the quality of the oil in terms of friction modifiers, detergents etc. it is written on the back of the bottle in fine print and will be two letters beginning with S, for example "SL". the way you read it is the further the second letter is towards "Z" in the alphabet, the higher the oil quality is, or the richer in additives I guess you could say. the highest I've seen mineral oil is "SN" and synthetics go as high as "SM". generally I try to pick an SM grade synthetic for my car.

hope this helps give a better understanding :)

if it says "combined" then it is semi-synthetic.

mineral oils are the basic oil design. affordable, comes in a large range of viscosities and can reach a slightly higher grade then synthetics. (SN)

synthetics are an oil thats designed to be fast flowing, and keep the inside of your engine clean of sludge, but are expensive.

semi-synthetics are a mineral oil with an infused blend of synthetic, designed to be a good balance between the two or a more affordable alternative to synthetic.

when oil level drops at an abnormal rate and you don't have any leaks, or drops significantly after driving it hard, or you're car lets out blue smoke at high rpm, it's burning.

what oil do you have? I'll tell you it's grade. and it will be on the back somewhere, it has to be. might just be hard to find. :/

haha all good man. :)

well if SZ did exist then yeah it would be fkn insane lol. but SN is as high as it goes.

as to whether 10W30/40 is good for b16a, it depends on the condition of your engine. how many kms? I have a B18C2 tuned w/cams with 146,000KM on it and I run nulon 15W50 synthetic as it doesn't seem to burn. my engine revs to 8300RPM, which is where my power max's so I needed a moderate thickness that doesn't thin out easy, because when you rev high the oil thins out under the heat.

yeah man if the oils stays the same then stick with it, or if you change oils just use the same viscosity and grade. ;)

Going from what super-da9 said about high revving engines with high kms, that 10w-30 might burn especially when revving high so 10w-40 sounds good? Why synthetic? If you change your oil every 6 months do you really wanna spend that much? I buy castrol magnatec for $25 5L bottle

Hmm well B16a revs to 8500RPM correct? even if it's in good nick, 10W is a bit thin for a car with over 100,000km IMO. I'd suggest probably use the same kind of stuff I'm using, a 15W50 as our engines are similar and both from the same year. but I guess when it comes to buying a car and doing the first oil change, you don't know what's gonna burn till you try it.

also do you mean Honda genuine synthetic? like FEO ultra? if so thats actually a 5W40, I tried it when I first got my car and it chewed through it every time I revved it up. It's REALLY thin stuff. :/

Super-DA9

all depends on the age and condition of the engine, normally in high RPM B series you'd wanna use 10W40 if it's below 100,000km and 15W40/15W50 if it's over 100,000km.

but this principle changes depending on the condition of the seals in the engine, for example if the engine was overhauled, meaning the piston rings, valve seals/guides were all replaced you could go back to using thinner oil again, even if it was burning it before. also if the car's been extremely well taken care of and the seals are 100% intact regardless of having high kms you could still use thinner 10W oils.

the best way to find out if your not sure how the inside of your engine is like, is to experiment with different oils, starting with something on the thin side like a 10W30/10W40. if it burns it, then go thicker! 15W40/15W50. if it burns it, go thicker again! 20W50. if it ONLY burns at the top RPMs then just advance the second number. 30 to 40, or 40 to 50.

the difference between minerals and synthetics is basically quality, performance (lubricating and cooling performance), cleanliness and price. that said there are some really good mineral oils too. mainly comes down to how much you wanna spend. you should also change your oil at the same time regardless of it's type.

magnatec is fine man, my car ran happily on it when I first got it. good for economy too. :)

Not worried bout the flaps, but what they are attached to! If it was the rear mudflaps, they'd rip off the whole rear bar or some shit. Fronts would only tear off the sideskirts at worst.

I know neg rake is shit for accelerating and handling etc, but then why do all the commodores go for it? A bit of a generalisation, but they are the ones who drag mainly with their straight line power

Went out after work on Friday night, got home at 2:30am... ish, then had to get up at 7 to get ready to go get a wheel alignment.

They were also meant to fit some adjustable length tie rods, but it was to much of a pain in the ass, so I sat there from 8-12 for them to only do a wheel alignment, and raise it a tad... but I'm not fussed. Said it would be A LOT easier to install the rods if the engine wasn't in the way...

I'm still getting some slight tyre rub on the guard lining tabs, but I'll cut these out.

Sigh... don't say that... I just bought new coilovers (Ohlins DFV's) because the last ones (Tein SS) didn't sit low enough!

It did sit a little lower before the alignment, and it scrubbed on to many parts of the chassis... as I haven't put the lining back in yet!

Good job mate! I'll always stay true to the four-eyes, but yours is looking nice already!

Well, it's a few days until I get my licence back, so I got mine a new battery, put some air in the tyres, checked the oil, and plugged the holes left by my wiper/spoiler delete with grommets. It's meant to be sunny tomorrow, so I might get out there and clean off the thick layer of dust that has accumulated over the last six months. Just need some touch-up paint to turn the black grommets silver.

When I turned that key and heard her running smoothly, I felt so happy. Like new, ready to get back on the road.

canon FTW! no halves situation here, udig?Ha, the looks aren't important, but the fact that the 550D is made in Japan, while the D3100 is made in Thailand, is a major deciding factor for me. We're on a Honda forum, so we should all agree that there's no point buying from Thailand when you can get Japanese build quality!

Not that the D3100 will necessarily be poorly made, as it's still a Nikon, but, you know... It's not a Japanese-built Canon.

Cheers for the info. The ku36 should last longer (180 wear rating vs. 140 for the 595rsr) but they don't come in 205/45/16.

I like what you are running on your car at the moment. What are your wheel and tyre specs? I've got 16x7 +32 wheels and I'm hoping to get away with not rolling the rears by using 205/45 tyres..

Super-DA9

ahh ok, I was told that it was the other way round. guess you can't believe everything you hear huh? :S

anyway the specs on the wheels are 16x7 +33 6.9kg each. tyres are 205/45R16.

these wheels work perfectly for the way my car sits, just a nice offset and no guard rolling required! :)

rhys.l
24-08-2011, 03:53 PM
Cool well technically when I get my tyres the wheels should sit essentially the same as yours with no rolling required :). I think mine are poking more atm because of the big tyres I am currently running and the height the car is at. However, soon to be fixed!

yeah it looks like your tyres over hang the wheels lip a bit, my old 17's had that and they rubbed the guards whenever I hit a reasonable bump, but now nothing at all :)

if you're basically going with the same wheel/tyre setup as me (only slightly different offset) I'm sure you'll be more then happy with it :)

Keep the spoiler just incase you wanna sell the car, no one's gonna buy that shit anyway, not even for $5. You planning to go lower man? Wingless doesn't work that well with stock height imo

Dubstein
27-08-2011, 09:27 AM
Yeah i'll see what happens with the wing, going to have the car for quite a long time. And yeah planning on getting some king/eibach springs soon. Im not happy at all with the height that its at now.. lol

Not going to get these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/94-01-Integra-Lowering-Coilover-Coil-Springs-Adjustable-/320748882644?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4aae1f8ad4

But what do you think? xD

Looking at these 2.5" Drop http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SKUNK2-Civic-Del-Sol-Integra-Lowering-Springs-EG-EK-DC2-/350369885541?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5193ac2d65#ht_2630wt_1143

My take on the whole lowering thing is first lower just a tad, maybe 1.5" and learn to drive around like that, angling driveways, learning where you can go and where you can't. Then after that, go whatever height you want cos you'll be able to judge. But don't go really low off the bat, you gonna fkn rip off your front bar or some shit.

I'm on king springs but i've never used other springs so i can't really provide a comparison. My opinion is that it looks better, good price (esp. second hand) but they are just way too soft, a lot of suspension travel so your wheel moves up and down a lot, depending on width and offset it'll scrub on your guards. Train tracks are really these springs worst enemy. Speed humps are ok if you slow down enough but my breakfast comes up every morning when i go over the rails and my P plate falls off the dash lol

charliebrown
27-08-2011, 09:49 AM
2.5" front will be ok if you don't have a lip (i've got slightly under 2" with a mugen lip and i can get around) but when turning it might rub depending on your wheels. 2.25" rear is about what i've got, doesn't tuck, you need about 3" for a good tuck

then slam it

BC's BR series coilovers are great quality and nice and cheap.

don't get lowering springs past an inch and a bit without lowered shocks if you care about handling haha.

It doesn't cost anything man, you buy second hand springs, sell em for the same price. Only thing is you gotta put the springs in, takes like 2-3 hours of your time. Same with adjusting coilovers, except apparently they aren't comfy for a daily if you don't wanna get all butthurt

Aight Im just concerned about lowering because wear I live there are alot of horrible roads, not to mention my shithole of a driveway.. I'll show you a picture of my boss trying to get up it with 2.5' lowered kings.. Funny as.

Yeah i know, he knows, you know. Actually this was his first ever car, and he regrets doing stuff to it, had it for over 7 years i believe.. Just to lazy to sell it or get new stuff for it, Don't bag him out to much haha. He doesn't hoon around town and take pride in his ride like most of those rice lancers.

And the rims are not that bad, weights in at around 6kg.

yeah it looks like your tyres over hang the wheels lip a bit, my old 17's had that and they rubbed the guards whenever I hit a reasonable bump, but now nothing at all :)

if you're basically going with the same wheel/tyre setup as me (only slightly different offset) I'm sure you'll be more then happy with it :)

New ones, federal rsrs same as yours..it must be close so maybe if I remove that black strip of plastic I may have some joy.

haha yyeah i tried to aim it, i think its okay. Haven't had any complaints from other drivers. my da9 was my first car and i love it to bits ! yeah u can say that, fast enough to get me places (: just need to get my 2.25inch exhaust on and save up for suspension and it should be all good ;D

charliebrown
29-08-2011, 09:54 PM
I get squeaks sometimes ever since i dropped my rear further but i thought might be the shocks making the sound. Happens when i corner fast, speed bumps and angling driveways? No marks on the tyres so i dunno if the shocks are blown/blowing or if tyre rubs

oh ok, understood. interesting, what kind of suspension do you have? i'm sure if I'm turning hard enough with enough G's to roll the body a bit it might hit the guard a little, but my cars barely rolls around corners :S

I thought this was a problem I only experienced. Washed my car last friday, looked beautiful. Stepped outside a couple of hours later and its already covered in dust. I'm still sick so washing the car isn't really a priority atm and it seriously looks like its been rolled through a sand pit, even though I washed it twice last week. Every other car I see driving around looks clean :(

Even more annoying is the fact that my car had a soccer ball booted into it the other night. By the time I finish uni on a wednesday night there are people doing soccer training on the ovals next to the car park that most people use. They must be ****ing shit players because I was driving out of the uni, was no where near the goals but a ball smashed into the side of my car.. It scared the shit out of me. Now I have noticed the ball has marked my paint :(. One my tonsilitis ****s off I'll give it a thorough wash but I reckon the marks will still be there. I'm considering taking it up with the university.
